    Hi,

    I have a audi A4 1.9Tdi Saloon 2003,

Lately i have noticed it hard to change gears. I brought it to a mechanic to check it out, He said the Clutch was breaking high, However it was not slipping.

He put an additive into to the gearbox to allow it to change gears more freely, However this hasnt resolved the problem, Sometimes it hard to select gears, espically 1st and 2nd, The odd time i ge a very small shudder when i select the gear and raise the Pedal, but its only a small shudder.

Im not to sure is it the Clutch or the gearbox that the problemm is with, As anyone had the seen this issue before. Could it be the Syncro in the gearbox or does this sound like a clutch replacement.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks

Had a similar thing happen to my tdi passat, I think it was the clutch plate that was replaced. Think it comes as a kit.
    Cant be 100% though

I had the same problem recently with my 00 Nissan Alemera and the problem turned out to a 'friction disc' which is a component of a clutch. The friction disc itself was worn down to the last. Anytime I'd put the car in to 1st gear the car would just tudder and then it would be fine but what i'll happen eventually is your car just wouldn't move when you put it in to gear. You can reve it all you want but the car just wouldn't take off. Here's a link from youtube to make all this more understanable. You can buy a new clutch for between 150-180Eur.

    Hope this is helpful.

Seeing as the OP has a diesel, I'd put money on that it's the DMF that's on the way out.

An expensive form of bad luck OP I'm afraid.

I had a 97 A4 1.9TDI and at 60,000 miles the gear box starting playing up, I was finding it difficult to get it into 1st gear and 2nd gear. At the beginning it was intermittent but eventually the gearbox packed in at 170,000 miles at which stage I got rid of the car.
I then went off and bought 03 1.9tdi A4 (I know stupid when you consider what happened the previous model) and it was stiff in the low gears but the garage lubricated them similar to what one of the other posts mentioned and it seemed to contain the problem. I clocked up 150000 miles on it and the gearbox was grand but it always had to be lubricated every few months. It seems to be a problem with Audis in general.

There is a simple enough way to tell if its the clutch.

When you try to put it into first, if you get resistance hold it at the resistance point. Then switch off the engine, if it slips in no problem when the engine is turned off, the clutch is not fully/properly disengaging.

    What were you expecting.

Cars wear out I wouldn't consider that to be poor reliability or a reason not to buy another, allied to the fact you covered 110k miles without having it fixed

Will try out your test above. Was talking to a mechanic about it, he was saying if it was a gearbox problem, could be expensive :-(, Not to sure should i change the car if this is the case.
