Bought a jap import from merlin auctions , a mazda 2 really nice car anyway it displayed the information on the screen of the car showing vrt aprrox 398.00 which i had budgeted for
Bought the car and was told would have to wait two weeks to get it booked into to get the vrt paid as it is now done through the nct place
Anyway was not happy but had to wait as car was what i wanted
Picking up car tomorrow after waiting 2 weeks to be told now that the 398.00 vrt figure might be wrong and it could be 496.00 which i did not budget for
The car was sold to me with a figure of 398.00 approx on the window, looked up the meaning of approx and it shows close to or nearest to

I have told merlin its not my problem if they mis calc vrt and they should honour whats on window , they said they might meet me half way ...
Do i have any legal comeback on this as car was advertised as approx 398.00 VRT

Can't you check the vrt on the revenue website? Did you do that?

drunkmonkey .. do u know the meaning of the word aprrox , feel free to look it up , means close too or near exact
There is a massive difference between what is displayed on the car and what they are looking for ...

VRT is now based on an inspection though, so their approximate figure is all they can do, right? So if they're meeting you half way, they're doing ok in my books. 45 odd quid isn't a deal-breaker in fairness.

True, but VRT is between you and the Revenue. It has nothing to do with the seller as far as I am aware.

I'm shocked they offered to meet you halfway, great CS on their part. I'd take it and run before they wake up.

Agreed, the fact that they offered to meet you half way when they didn't give an exact figure is a good gesture from them and you should take it straight away!!!

Would have thought that's as good as you'll get. Now if they had sold you the car at a price that was inclusive of the vrt, then you might have a case. Doesn't sound like that's what happened here tho...

You have legal rights in so far as its illegal to sell a car in Ireland to a member of the public that isn't registered here. Unless, of course, you impersonated being a dealer to purchase it...

However, all you can do is get the seller in trouble for selling it, not get your ~50 quid back.

I really don't think you have a leg to stand OP Aprox's mean just that, and they usually stress this point as the car is going up for sale, if they are offering half id take it hand and all. Don't forget that you would lose your €500 deposit as well if you were to pull out.So its a cheaper option to just cough it up.

To be fair, you shouldnt be going buying at auction if you cannot afford to stump up an unexpected €100 as any auction car (especially a cheap one) is likely to require some unexpected spending.
IMO, the auction people have no responsibility here as the best they can do is give you an estimate. They did this and said it was approximate. Now using your own definition of approximate - nearest to, this is what the gave you. The best/nearest estimate possible without a full inspection by vrt people

So, 'approx' means one thing; 'massive' equals €98?

Pay the extra €47, and enjoy your new car.
