What is your real motive here? Why not take up charity work?

You don't have to change your career to give something back to society and make a difference. So what is your real motive?

Not meaning to beat you up, but, it's best to be honest with yourself.

Before jumping ship, I would try to do some work experience in whatever field you're interested in. Even "shadow" someone for a few hours/a day or two- you'd be amazed what might click with you, and equally, what might not.
Try to go to some open days, or get in contact with mature students in the course(s) you're interested in. Get feedback on pros/cons.
Jobs in the medical field aren't all that different from many jobs in lots of ways...you don't always get a thank you, you're dealing with stressed people in stressful situations....go in with your eyes open& homework done.
Maybe it's simply a matter of a new challenge/focus that you need? Versus a career change? There's more to life than work, would now be a time to build your family?

Im not being rude in my post op :) im just being "direct" so please dont mistake my frankness for rudeness :P

    Are you crazy? No.
Is it a stupid idea? Yes.

There is nothing wrong to want something else if you feel bored or unforfilled as its for your gain. But if your reasons for wanting to do so are because your job is "of no benefit to society" and "want to be doing something that's going to make real difference to people's lives" is foolish.

Its foolish because you could quit your job, cant find another, fall behind on mortage payments and become in debt. Which you have to ask yourself... would you then be thinking about helping others?
