    Hi all,

Right currently we download avi, put them on an external HDD and connect that to the PS3 from which we watch them. Its ok and no real problems but it won't play mkv and we hope to get a new tv and want to max the number of programs we watch in HD.

So what i'm looking to do is have a wireless unit that i can transfer files to and then play them on the tv via HMDI. Our router is in another room so it has to be on a wireless network.

    So it must have

    Wireless transfer from mac
    Play MKV, AVI
    Connect to tv via HDMI
    Have a remote.

i don't care aobut music or photos. I have Sonos set up via a different NAS in a different room.

    Over to you.

You will find it difficult top get MKV to transfer over wireless as the bit rates are very high. should work over high speed homeplugs though

Had the wrong link to the device I was looking at ...looking at the WD Live Hub which does what you want when you add a wireless addon but cant find it on European sites

    See below

The WD TV live family in general is based on the Sigma processor family the same as the Popcornhour and AZBox and can play almost any file type. The other units dont take an internal drive and depend on a USB drive being plugged into it or playing from a NAS elsewhere on the network.

Ok so i'd need to get that with a wireless add on or that with homeplugs ?

Oh and i can't find it for sale anywhere, is it only announced or not available ?

I would suggest homeplugs anyway between your router and the unit...I hate wireless for heavyduty file transfer.

Seems very new so it may not be out yet here. There are other brands but lots of them seem fairly crap and the ones with hardrives built in seem to be generally poor for some reason. WD TV has a good rep, my brother has the regular WD TV Live and it works great.

    Popcornhour is another good option

    Great,

But it would still go wireless from my mac to router as it's in a different room.

I take it the unit would just appear as part of my network .

Popcornhour looks good, as I said would it just appear as member of my network ?

On wireless, its up to you, I dont think its the best way to go. I would hardwire the mac also but if you are happy with your current performance then maybe its fine.

Popcorhour is linux based but has an FTP client which would be the best way to move files from your mac anyway.

I'd wait for the Boxee box. It will blow the competition away!
