hi everyone when it comes to looking at the spec of a computer i am totally lost :confused:but the girlfriend is looking for a laptop/note book for christmas and i found these but what are they like
i am after something basic that dose what its suppose to do
i dont have wads of cash to spend on a fancy one with all extra spec or programs that would never be used and i know i will get what i pay for but saying that would these be like for some light web browsing and some written documents its not going to get much hardship or loaded up with stuff

i am reluctant about buying a second hand one due to viruses or something wrong with it

i dont want to ring him until i know if there any good or not

    umm.. i'd avoid that! :)

What's your "this is what i want to spend" limit?

ok i will leave them so
the most i would have to spend is around the €200 mark i know its not much and might wont get a high spec machine but all is required is something basic something for a bit of web browsing-emails-typing up assignments
the assignments can be stored on a usb stick so it dont require a huge amount of memory
its just a basic machine i am looking for and i am on a budget so cant really afford much more

she said a second hand machine would do but i have a fear of buying one that has viruses or other problems with it that turn out to be major and would end up costing a fortune to get back right

If you're not in a rush to get a netbook, wait a while until there will be a nice deal... Tesco quite often is doing a deals on netbooks, my brother got a HP mini for as far as i remember €229, one which is at around €370 in currys. I bet there will be a lot of deals before xmas.

    this one, but silver http://www.netbook.ie/Products/96-hp-mini-110-1115sa-black-netbook.aspx

I wouldn't be too bothered about that. There's a wealth of free tools you can use to scan and remove virus'. And besides, you'll always have Boards here for advice!

If i were you looking to buy second hand i would go with adverts.ie, ive used it a fair bit, and there is a reputation system so you can see if you are buying off an established member or not. Plus you can ask questions on thread, and benefit from others haggling the price down. Should be able to pick up a proper netbook (ie not one running windows ce like that one on gumtree) for two hundred or less.

Ask for pictures before you go out and see anything though

if you could somehow stretch it, this would be quite good:

    similar spec reviews: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Samsung-N150.25710.0.html

There's a few on this site too, but i have no idea who they are or how reliable they might be.

Best bet then is to keep an eye on Adverts.ie

You could get a second hand netbook for about that on adverts. The original machine you posted would really only be suitable for browsing the lightest webpages (e.g. definitely not youtube, might struggle on facebook but boards should be okay) honestly not worth the frustration. Went to adverts quickly and this was top of the list for €225, you might be able to talk him down to €200 and its well worth it over a newer lesser machine.

Just reinstall windows after you get the laptop, its really dead easy.

should be fine for those purposes. battery life is not brilliant at 2 hours but if that's not an issue should be ok...

what would it be like loading web pages for example boards-facebook and maybe youtube
i am asking because i only know the very basics about computers and me looking at the spec of a computer would be like a pig looking to fly a helicopter

as far a web browsing is concerned, it will load web pages just fine.

The spec is good for what you're paying. If it is a centrino processor, those laptops have wireless built in, and remember the seller said no CD/DVD drive. Just check the wireless is working before you buy otherwise you might need to buy a wireless card (if you use wireless). Ask about the XP CD too.
