Can anyone help? Oh I hope this is in the right area. I deleted files yesterday and they are not in my recycle bin. These were personal files (college files) on work pc, so no biggy if I don't find them but saying that I would rather not have anyone find my college exam results in about 5 years time. I have searched PC drives, company and personal (where they were stored) Can anyone help?

removing all personal data from a windows machine is well nigh impossible
so you would be best to wipe the hard drive before handing it on

if it's not yours you could use sdelete to wipe the free space otherwise files can be recovered with the likes of photorec

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb897443.aspx

to run it in a command prompt

    md empty
    cd empty
    dir

(the above steps make an empty folder so if you screw up it wont
    sdelete -z

photorec will recover files to an external drive, there are probably better utilities to recover single files, photorec is a more of a bare metal tool , it will recover all undeleted files , but not their names and there could be thousands to sort through later on

I'm sure someone will post up a friendlier undelete utility , but in the mean time don't install new programs of download stuff as you may overwrite the space where the files were

I'm assuming you have other copies of them, you just don't want them lying about on a work PC?

Its possible the recycle bin is emptied every night automatically (or week, month) by IT system policy. Throw another file in there & see if it gets removed tonight, or wait longer as it might be weekly.

Files deleted from network shares by default do not end up in a recycle bin. Ask your IT dept. to recover them for you if they are required.

Note that files stored on company machines (locally or on the network) become property of the company. They can store them for as long as they want (in backups) even after you have deleted them.

If it's a network drive then don't run sdelete, it will take ages and may crash the server when it runs out of space :p

the good news is server drives tend to overwrite data quite quicky , the bad new is as others have pointed out is that the files are probably backedup by now
