Scanningschmanning

Have a Lexmark All-in-one X4580 Printer. (Multi-function my hoo-haa!!) Having re-curring problems scanning stuff. Was never able to scan using Scan Button on Printer. (Message on LCD was Downloading Application List) for about half an hour, then it told me it cannot download Application List. Never managed to find out why, I think the nearest I came to an answer was that my model doesn't have a scanning function, well then why the eff. does it have a scanning button??!! Anyways other option is using Usb cable - and scanning from the Lexmark Imaging Studio page. That worked fine for a fair while, then lately anytime I went to scan that way I get Box pop-ups telling me to scan using my Printer Scan button for better results. Ermmm yeah stupid pop-up :P I'd be doing that in the first place if it would work like! :D

So third option I was advised by Lexmark was to import using Windows Live Gallery. That was going grand without any problems for a while, and then it stopped working lately. It's not listing my Printer in the Import from list. If I refresh printers it doesn't do anything. Lexmark now conclude my Usb cable must be faulty. And that I shouldn't be able to scan/print etc. until I get a new Usb cable. (In fairness the Lexmark team are pretty prompt and quite helpful when they can.) But guess what I did ..... Good old System Restore - it's hard to beat is that System Restore jobby! :D But anyways it has restored my printing capabilites but still can't scan with Windows Photo Gallery. It's a pity I can't go back further than 5 days and I could try earlier points in time to see would it get the scanning with Windows Photos Gallery back. :-/

My Laptop is Advent 9415 and I've got Windows Vista 32-bit. Just to add, printing wirelessly has always worked fine. Another thing, - I regularly get Error messages about Sub-spooler not working and Printer communications on my desktop stopped and something about desktop notifications. And Windows not launching is another one, me bad :o but admittedly I just ignore them. I see things about people advising to re-set the Spooler but I've no idea how to do that. Actually have to say I had put these down to Connectivity issues I had been having, thinking Spooler had to be re-set everytime I had connection trouble. But I don't know, Laptop still worked pretty fine even getting those error messages, also those 3/4 messages would show up in-frequently at any given time.

But Another Error message I've been getting after attempts to re-install Printer Driver is about GUI Application/Interface not working. Alas have no idea what GUI is/means and have no experience of it.

Have un-installed and re-installed Printer driver a few times to no avail. System Restore means I'm now able to print again. My Printer is now back in my Printers Folder. Is it supposed to be in the Devices section as well? If it is I can't see it, what would it be under? - I wanted to see could I do that scan for changes or whatever it's called by clicking on Devices but I don't see my Printer in Devices. Unless it's in a sub-category/field. Or is it supposed to be in Devices at all if it's in the Printers Folder?

I was advised to update my Windows Driver but this spells trouble with a T for a non-techie like me.

So, my conundrum now is if I go out and buy a new Usb cable will it still be the same or will it get back my Printer in the Import from list in Window Photos Gallery which will mean I'll be able scan again. :-} Or, will buying a new Usb cable do anything?!? Who/what is to say that getting a new Usb Cable will work at all but my money will be spent on it lol! Actually how much is a Usb cable, I must check if it costs much.

I do Windows Updates religiously, well it does it itself anyway lol. My other option is to go full-scale hammer n tongs into trying to find out does any-one know how to Download this mysterious Application List for my Printer, so that I may be able to scan using the Scan button on the Printer.

Oh just remembered I am getting a Run-DLL error message now too when I start up my Laptop! It's about some.exe application or another, pity I didn't note down what the error message said, I might try screen-shot it next time if I can.

I tried installing my Printer on another Laptop, both with the Installation CD and Website Driver, but both times it just came up that it didn't install correctly. It didn't even say it was corrupted or anything if I recall. It was just one line, to the effect of - Printer did not install correctly.

Any assistance greatly appreciated on the matter cheers!

I'll finish by saying it's a great co-incidence that when googling I've found other people are also having the Cannot download Application List like me in the first instance, and more googling to find out others are also experiencing their Printers not being recognized using Windows Photos Gallery like me in the third instance .... One conclusion could be that Lexmark are attempting to limit or in a discrete way call a halt to user's scanning features ..... Maybe some-one in the office made a boo-boo and pressed the wrong button by accident or something meaning we wouldn't be able to scan anymore woopsies!! I don't know .....

But like .... Printing has been restored using a System Restore point. When I was onto the Lexmark Technician it was like the end of the world oh I have to get a new Usb cable when he realised my Printer wasn't being recognized .... (I'm not sure what Folder he went into, it could have been the Devices section, I'm not sure where but my Printer wasn't there anyway.) But with System Restore my Printer is now back in the Printers Folder, I just now need to magically restore scanning some way, and I'll be a happy bunny again!

I don't know anything about the workings of System Restore, maybe it doesn't restore absolutely everything, like if so, - well maybe it's just not capable of restoring my Printer to the Printers list to re-enable me to import from and scan using Windows Photos Gallery even if it managed to restore the ability to print.

But then another thing is you can only use scanning/importing with Windows Photos Gallery using the Usb cable so maybe System Restore couldn't restore it because of that, so maybe it is that my Usb cable is faulty.

    Am all scanned out now. :confused: Oh my goodness what a long post!! Folk will be struggling to reach the end! :-/ I'm sorry in advance! :-}

I don't mean this in a rude way, but that post is a textbook example of TL;DR.

I have no idea what's causing your problem, and in fact only understand your problem to be a general "scanning" issue. Can I suggest that you try and summarise the problem you're having? Something like the following:

I have a combined Printer/Scanner MODEL XXXX (preferably with a link to the manufacturer listing for the product) and laptop/computer MODEL YYYY (again, links preferred) running WINDOWS ZZZZ and SOFTWARE QQQQ.

I have/have not ever been able to use the scanner correctly. (Delete as appropriate).
It does/does not work as a printer at present. (Delete as appropriate).
It is/is not under warranty from the manufacturer. (Delete as appropriate).
When I try to scan, I get the following behaviour: (Describe problem behaviour, including the full text of any relevant error messages).

This may or may not be relevant, but I have also noticed other things happening since this problem began: (Describe any other issues that you think may be related to the problem).

So far I have tried: (Brief summary of attempted fixes).

***Actually I've just realised the USb Cable must be at fault as it's noisy/gurgling/hissing etc. when plugged in, so that has to be replaced anyway. So will dis-count First Post query putting it down to faulty Usb Cable.***

    * But I will still ask the question though. Does any-one know how or if it's possible to scan using the Scan button on following Printer ??

I have an All-In-One Lexmark Copier/Scanner/Printer MODEL X4580, and an Advent Laptop MODEL 9415, (Manufacturer's Website here? Un-able to source/location Product Model Description/details,) running WINDOWS Vista 32-bit.

I have never been able to use the Scanner via queried method correctly.
It does work as a Printer at present.
It is not under Warranty from the Manufacturer.
When I try to scan, I get the following behaviour: After hitting Scan button on Printer, Printer LCD reads "Downloading Application List," then a second message to select my computer, then a third message; - "Cannot retrieve Application List."

So far I have tried: nothing to resolve this as 1) even though my Printer Model does have a Scan button, I am not entirely sure if my Model itself has scanning abilities capable for this usage from Machine's Scan button, and 2) I was able to scan using Lexmark's Imaging Studio, or importing from Scanner using Usb Cable with Windows Photos Gallery.

Awwww I thought my usb cable must have been faulty as I noticed it was hissing and making un-healthy sounds so I went and got a new one, but scanning facility using usb cable still isn't working! :(

I've tried Freewarefiles' FreeOCR and it recognizes my Printer alright in its's Scanner List but when I go to scan it doesn't.

    What a joke ..... :(
