Luggage & Changing Airlines

I'm going abroad early next year and the trip involves two airlines, Aer Lingus and Emirates. The first leg will be from Shannon to Birmingham with Aer Lingus; then Birmingham to Dubai with Emirates, and finally Dubai to Tokyo, also with Emirates.

I'm new to long distance international flights so I'm wondering will I have to retrieve my luggage in Birmingham and Dubai, or just Birmingham as that is when I'm changing from Aer Lingus to Emirates, or maybe when I put it through in Shannon I don't have to worry about it until Tokyo?

    Thanks in advance

It all depends on how you booked your ticket. If it was all in one go then it'll be fine and sent through. If you bought the Aer Lingus and Emirates tickets separately then you'll more than likely have to pick them up at Birmingham.

Either way ask at check in.

I booked them all together, however, as you say I will ask when I check in.

According to the Aer Lingus site:

Onward check-in (on same day of travel) is available on selected Aer Lingus flights and with the following airlines:
    • AA American Airlines
    • AF Air France
    • AY Finnair
    • BA British Airways
    • CX Cathay Pacific
    • EK Emirates
    • IB Iberia
    • KL KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
    • QF Qantas
    • SQ Singapore Airlines
So it looks like they will check your baggage through the whole way!

I wouldn't be so sure about that. AA told me before, when I was transitiing through Miami on 2 different tickets, that I should have gotten Aer Lingus to check bags through all the way.

I'd be pretty sure. What AA know about Aer Lingus' policies could probably be written on the back of a stamp ;)

Aer Lingus *can* do it on seperate tickets, they just stopped doing it as a matter of policy. The reason is that the first airline that handles a bag is responsible for it. If Aer Lingus check your bag through on seperate tickets and Emirates (for example) end up losing it, it's Aer Lingus' eventual responsibility and cost - even if it wasn't their fault. That's just how the system works.

Obviously, they have no choice but to take that responsibility when the trip is all on one ticket, but that's why they stopped doing it for seperate tickets :)
