2008 Ford Mondeo 2.0 litre TDCi

    Right guys, I'm going to look at one of these in Titanium X spec at the weekend so looking for opinions especially first hand experience. It's the 140bhp 6 speed manual version which is a PSA unit to my knowledge. I've had a good experience with Ford before (Focus TDCi) and I am quite happy with the way they are put together and handle.

    The one thing that is a little concern for me is that the Mondeo TDCi is not very Co2 friendly, falling into the Cat D tax bracket with it coming in at €447 at present. Now before anyone starts I am happy to pay this as I am currently paying that for my 2006 car anyway so the additional power will be a nice bonus. My only concern is trying to shift this car on in a few years as Ireland seems to have gone low car tax mad where anything over €302 seems to be out of favour with average Joe.

    Still pretty good going compared to the cc based motor tax. And I don't think 447 vs 302 will be a big issue come resell time. Even in motor tax anal Ireland :)

    Anyway, the Mondeo is an excellent car by all means. The one thing I would query is, does it suffer from DMF issues like many modern manual diesels?

    It does indeed but finding an auto Mondeo in the generous Titanium X trim is tough going in this country.

    I agree with you that Ireland are going cheap tax mad actually cheap anything mad !! However it will be interesting to see what the famous budget does to car tax ? Will this 150 etc tax continue or will it be doubled and what will happen with the ordinary car tax ;)

    Just looking through the history of one of the 08 Titanium's we have on fleet.

    Had the A/C repaired after a year, and it's not the only Mondeo we've had A/C issues with - think 3 or 4 have had the issue.

    Had the keyless start replaced - that caused an issue on all the Titaniums we have.

    Quite a few damaged tyres - could be down to the driver and the area, but 235/45/17 aren't exactly cheap.

    There is a note of a breakdown at about 93,000km, but no details on what happened.

    Currently around 150,000km on, but it's an Auto so no clutch or flywheel to worry about. Another one had the air con compressor replaced after a year, so check if that's been done or if they'll cover it as part of the warranty. Only 50k on that one.

    2.0Tdci Zetec Estate with 144,000k and no clutch yet, and a 2.0Tdci Zetec Hatch with 137,000k and no clutch, so it doesn't look like they let go early.

    There is a nice looking Ghia Auto on Carzone with full beige leather. Don't think there was a huge spec difference between the 2, so might be worth looking at.

    Getting back to the subject...OP, I think the country has gone a little tax mad and you'll probably find people are choosing the 1.8 here before the 2.0 for that simple reason. God knows why. I was in the UK a few weeks ago and had a 2.0 TDCi Galaxy. Much bigger and heavier than the Mondeo I'd say and ferrying around 6 of us and by god is that engine a good un.

    If you want a car to sell on, then go for the 1.8, otherwise get the 2.0. (IMO)

    Thanks guys for the info and opinion. The 1.8 litre is ruled out, could not live with it, will either be the 2.0 litre or a different car.

    I've put 85,000 km on that 2.0 TDCi in an S-Max in a bit under 3 years, no problems with DPF or DMF yet. Nothing's gone wrong at all, in fact.

    The current gen Mondeo is very reliable, the only real negative is the emissions of the 2.0 TDCi, if it emitted just 1 g/km less it would have been in band C. I would be concerned by the CO2 simply because with the forthcoming budget you can be sure that they will be looking at the new tax system, with upwards of 70% of cars now paying €156 or less on motor tax you can be sure the Government will want to change this, especially when most people before were paying around the €330-€450 mark.

    The only other thing to watch is the facelifted version is out very soon so that will depress values. Just make sure that what you're buying is priced with that in mind.

    It's a really tough one, because the Mondeo is such a good car, it seems a bit silly to dismiss a decent spec TDCi because it is in the 'wrong' tax band but we all know that it will have an impact on the car's saleability with the general public.

    The one thing is that back in 2008 band C was very much the norm for cars in that size, band Bs virtually did not exist bar the likes of the Mondeo Econetic but that is very rare, so band D is not a complete disadvantage in that context, it's not like today where anything outside of band B is a major disadvantage, sure these days a 530d is in band D, it just shows how much progress there has been in only two years!

    Great Car:
    I've put up a few thousand kms in a family members 08 Mondeo Titanium X 2.0 TCDI auto and I'm tempted to buy one as my next car.
    Reasonable power you won't be embarresed at traffic lights;).
    Comfortable with plenty of room, great for long journeys.
    Got from Belfast to Dublin to Cork to Limerick to Galway and still had about 150km left in the tank.
    Some nice extras like the Ford Connect system with bluetooth phone connection and voice controls for setting the a/c and changing the radio etc.
    Only issue with the car I drove was the adaptive headlights. If i drove over a speed-bump or some rough road I would get a false warning of a malfunction but they continued to work fine.

    The Tax on the 2.0 TCDI auto is over €600 so you might want to double check the tax bands.

    If you do get it you will enjoy it!!

    I wouldn't bother with the auto, if you're gonna be paying that much to tax your car you might as well get something really special like a 530d or 535d as these are, like the Auto Mondeo, in band E.

    But the BMWs would be 10k-15k+ more expensive to buy a 08.

    Your right lads, 2008 2.0 TDCi auto Co2 is 189g/km which just makes into the €630 tax braket. From a resale point of view I would be very reluctant to buy one as I'd probably be married to it.

    Actually the manual 2.0 TDCi according to Parkers comes in at 139g/km which puts it in at €156 => http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=36957

    Obviously I will check on Saturday but would anyone be able to confirm this now?

    Just checked on the V5 of one on another UK site and the Co2 is 156g/km so €447. Still not bad though considering I'm paying that for a 1.6 at the moment.

    Cracking to drive in Dynamic mode, very fuel effecient in Normal mode.

    Problem for you is that it's not an Opel, so you can't have it :p

    Don't forget that if it's registered before the 1st July 2008 then it can be taxed on engine size - saving a massive €16 a year at current rates.

    The early models (definitely 08s) are in band D.

    They improved them to band C after a while, I have no idea when but it could have been in the middle of 09(08s are definitely band D); band B 2.0s are a recent development, only came well into this year, whenever they introduced the 163 PS version.

    Seems the injectors MAYBE a problem in them also, they are an issue in the ST TDCI that I own, but not sure about the standard 2.0

    Fine car in fairness, no complaints on mine, have it for 10k miles now and can't complain :)
