Self service my motor or nay

I am looking at doing a mini service on my 2005 Transit. 2 ltr D.

Gonna change the oil and put a good quality 5W/40 fully synth. Need to top up the power steering fluid - no idea about that so any tips appreciated but was going to stick with Castrol.

Can change the fuel & air filter myself.

However, Im seeing a lot of 'deals' at garages for services from €99 to €130

If I could get something in between would I be better off going this route

Ie. 5 ltr good quality oil approx. €50
    Fuel filter: €20
    P/steering fluid: €15
    Air filter: unknown

So Im upto €85 already (without air filter)

Are there better deals on servicing I can get from a reputable dealer and what air filter should I use for my wagon?

Are Halfords the place to go for all the about if I go self service?

Only if you want to be wistful for how little dealers charged you...

Local motor factors or online. Halfords is where you go to get something in an emergency at 5:29 on a Sunday evening, thats all.

Pr reillys in Kilbarrack is the place to go for service parts. Most normal services won't include a fuel filter so ask the garage for a breakdown of price and service If u choose to go that route

Get a trade card and you can get oil very cheap but would never buy a filter there, those 99 euro services wont ever include power steering fluid, fully synth oil or any form of fuel filter, you will find some wont even do the air filter tbh its well worth doing it yourself as its difficult to find a good garage

+1 as well as 20% off other service items.

I do. They sell Fram oil filters, cartridges, cabin filters, air filters etc at good prices (-20% of course).

Those prices are generally for an oil and oil filter change, anything else will be extra :)

Local motor factors is a better option than Halfords :)

Go to a motor factors and you'll get a better price.

Halfords can have good prices. I recently bought 5 litres of 10w40 Semi synth for 18.99. That's only a couple of quid more than LIDL prices. That was a special offer, it's now gone back up to I think 23.99.

10w40 is probably not suitable for a 2005 transit but 5w30 semi synth ACEA B1 with Ford specification WSS-M2C 913-B might be (need to check this) 30 quid for 5 litres in Halfords.

What do people do with the spent oil when they drain the oil? Can't imagine it being too easy to dispose of legally.

If you source the parts locally from a Motor Factors that doesn't have a Halfords sign over the door and carry out the service yourself you'll have a great feeling of achievement afterwards and you'll also know that the parts were actually replaced and not just polished with a rag soaked in alcohol

Local dump takes it for free I think if you have your receipt that you have paid your refuse charges off the corporation, only take 2 gallons at a time though. Maybe they take a €1 off you too. It's not a big deal anyway. The ole lad must get cracking on it actually, 3 gallons of it at home and another one coming in a week or two once I service his car.

Just ring up 1 of them €99 service garages and ask them what oil will they be using and for the old filters, plugs etc. back, i think the €99 prices start from 1ltr cars as the parts for bigger engines will obviously be dearer.

Forgive my ignorance but where can I get a trade card?

Its not a set 20% off it varies up to maybe 90% on some items and down to only 5% on others, oil in particular gives a great saving :D

nothing but a purflux original oil filter would go near my car
