So, has anyone else opinions on long tedious on line forms employers wish us to fill out...

was interested in some roles in the uk with a big automotive firm, but was pissed off no end with all the sh|t i had to fill in, secondary school, all subjects, results, grades, remarks.

and as well as all third level results and comments and practically individual lecturers names, i had to give 250 word answers to 4 or so various nonsense questions.

fekkin hell, sure we have some time on our hands but i think i will give this a miss. I prefer the direct email route to hr with a cover letter.

actually it might not be bad for fresh grads, but since I did my LC like in 1993 I cant be half arsed to fill in this or don't think it is relevant, but the little fu|ke|s had a red asterix over it, so it is obviously very important to them what grades I got in english and Irish...!

Depends on how much you want the job I suppose.

I guess, but it is frankly a bit ridiculous.

for anyone with uni level education i cant see what point telling them your lc/gcse's etc are, especially if you have a masters or so.

and the fact they are mandatory makes it more ridiculous, so frankly they can fob off.

I always stick my LC grades on my cv.

Leaving Certificate (1993-1999) xxx points, with 5 honours on higher level papers (including yyyyy), and an A1 in ordinary level maths

yyy= whatever subject I deem relevant to the job.

I didn't do an amazing leaving but most employers have a leaving cert so it's something they understand. At the back of their minds they must also have minimum points / grade requirements and putting this info on your cv helps them make a decision if it comes down to you and one other candidate.

i got no room on my cv for a LC, it is biased to fresh grads people in their 20s for sure, hell I dont even know what I did in the lc at this stage

    I'm 28 and it's a bullet-point on my cv.
i only include it for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

As someone who has filled in an enormous amount of applications, particularly in the accounting/finance area, I can only agree.

I have to register and log in to the same application system for many of these roles, filling in exactly the same details each and every time. Even the reasoning tests are exactly the same! It's frustrating when you know each recruiter is using the same system, yet forces you to complete the process over and over individually each time.

For roles that are largely similar, like in banking/finance/accounting, there should be a standard application form that works across all companies, with the option of adding additional questions that vary between companies.

If I have to fill out my LC details and my individual college module results one more time, I'll scream. I'm not lazy about completing application forms - I just think it's stupid re-writing my personal and education details every time when they are NOT going to change.

PLus the leaving cert is dumbed down these days anyway, so their results will look far better than yours. Never mind them tossers op.

Agree. If you have both undergraduate and postgraduate degree, and, say, achieved at least 2.1 on both, then questions for your LC are simply ridiculous, if not offensive.

One of my friends has 1.1 from both under- and post-graduate degree. She was invited to an interview, but they said to her that because her LC results were bad, they would not be going further with the application. WTF?!

Similar to that, I've done a Business degree where I got 90%+ in any Maths modules I took in first and second year.

But one application would not allow me to even access their application because my Leaving Cert Maths grade was below the threshold. Honestly, it was ridiculous.

Come on, how LC done 10 or more years ego could possibly be of any relevance? (Especially, if you have a master's degree?) Why not go further and ask questions about kindergarten?!

I'm guessing its the Jaguar grad program!

Yea I have to admit I've never faced quite that level of bull**** in an application form before! Started it and had to put it aside as I am in the middle of finishing my thesis. Will launch back into it next week.

"Describe a time when you had to persuade someone to undertake an action they did not want to do? " ::vomit::
I presume they're just looking for the usual cliched crap about team skills etc

Thank God I'm not the only one who hates those stupid things.

Just did an assessment test yesterday for an Irish company - 3 sections. The exact same as one I did for an Irish company 3 weeks ago. What can they even tell from those things?? I'm quite bright, have a good LC,degree etc, etc, understood the tests and (I thought) did pretty okay in them, but....apparently I didn't qualify for the one 3 weeks ago. Why, I'd have to ask??? Don't get it.

As for answering questions on how you're a great team player and you've great motivational skills and you're a self-starter and you've got excellent problem -solving skills and you pull bunny rabbits out of hats all day long - ridiculous....Bottom line? I'm a damn good worker, I'll do whatever is asked of me, I'm totally capable of doing the job (wouldn't be applying otherwise)...can you please just give it to me??????(there's no section on any form for that...:D)

It also introduces bias on the basis of ethnicity: people who didn't grow up here sat different qualifications so don't have LC marks the same way that most of ye do. Imagine what am employer would say if I wrote "University entrance accredited" - it sounds like a BS back door, but in fact it was the way that brighter bears who kept up with the work (and got on with the teachers!) got a good result back in my day, where I was.

(I'm an Irish citizen, BTW: my father went and stole the jobs in the country where I grew up, so I feel entitled to come here and steal 'em off you! ;) )

I think a lot of places do this as an initial screening. Companies are getting 3-4,000 applicants for 60-70 jobs, even with a long drawn out form, they just wouldn't have the staff to process all the applications if more people applied.

This way only the people who really want it and know what the job is about will bother.

These application forms were invented by Satan to annoy God by sending thousands of tormented souls to an early grave as a result of forceful hair extraction and head-banging-on-the-wall-trying-to-grasp-the-point-of-this-absurdity syndrome.

I find them a nuisance, they take half the day to do! Especially if they request extra documents and details and if I need to tailor my CV and Cover Letter for the job/internship/work-placement or graduate program. It is probably the fairest way though, screening the best applicant(s) for the job/grad program/internship/work-placement is the best option for both employers and applicants all round!

    make that 3 days...

I filled it in finally, I have no intention of going for the interview as it involves and assessment centre, biggest pile of bs invented.

I just wanted to see how I got on, prob wont even get to round two anyhoo with themselves and their overdrawn bs forms...:)

seems most of the work i want is abroad.. or very very abroad as in some cases :(
