Really is it actually that bad?

Well the car parks fill up pretty early and they stay full all day, it kind of depends on your times but yep, they're really bad. there's nowhere near enough parking spaces for everyone, so nearby housing estates fill up too.

If you do most of your driving before 9am or after 6pm though you'd prebably find a space alright :p

Parking around the corner in a estate without pay and display could end up with a Garda Parking fine, somehow.

You'll get a spot in the multi-storey if your in anytime before 10.

To answer your actual question if you're living on campus as you've indicated you'll find parking with ease, either in the residence car parks or in the free car parks. You won't have to ever use the multistory, pay for parking, or park off campus.

Other responses to your question seem to focus on someone who is driving to and from DCU each day so best to disregard their responses.

I've no idea but I imagine it's free. Spaces are however limited and are allocated at the start of the semester. I've no idea of the allocation process.

It's not much walk to either of the free car parks (a few 100 meters at most) and I'm sure with a bit of sensible parking your car will be safe i.e not leaving items inside on display.

Yes but as far as I know you can't leave cars parked overnight in the free car parks. I could be wrong on this.

I used to park in one of the estates which didn't have any pay and display, yellow lines, or anything saying i couldn't park. One day I came back to my Car with a sticker on the window saying i have a Garda parking fine.

You could park your car there on sunday night and leave it there until friday.....

You should have no problem with the free car parks as long as you don't leave your space during the day and plan to find it still there that afternoon!

You can leave your car in the free or multi story over night with absolutely no issues bar the usual safety concerns that you'd have in any car park.

Of course there are other parking laws which you may have broken unbeknownst to yourself such as parking too close to a junction, pedestrian crossing or speed bumps, blocking a drive way, etc..,

I have regularly used the free car parks over the past number of years for longish periods of time without issue. Never heard of any issues with parking In estates either. Residents don't seem to like it, but as long as you don't do anything blatantly illegal (i.e. park on a corner or block the road) you won't have any issues

I made sure i wasn't blocking anything, there were cars on the ramps a bit down the road and on the corner of the junctions. I think it's just because i parked outside the same person's house a few times and they complained.

Cycling avoided the problem happening again though.

jesus, i hope you didnt pay then! what can they complain about? they have driveways

They've started handing out those parking fines because the roads outside these houses(in the shanowen area) were never meant to be used in the capacity they are now.

Fun fact: The junction at Shanowen Avenue/Collins Avenue used to be a cul-de-sac. Then the real problems started when congestion started building up from people parking up on the grass, and half and half on the road and grass. Then people started doing it on both sides of the street, and what was a small two lane road to begin with, is reduced to the width of a single lane road.

People moan when the Gardaí do nothing, and when they do, and it affects them, they kick up a storm.

What justification are they using for issuing fines? It's not a no-parking zone, so unlessyou break a specific regulation they should not he able to fine you.

post photocopy of the ticket.... or else tell us which section of the RTA was broken ( e.g. you are fined for breach of S44 of Road Traffic Act 1961 ).

As for parking there is always space in the multistorey, 7 euro for 5 stays, serves you right if you weren't out of bed in time for the free carparks.

Not there's not. It closes pretty often due to being full from 11am to lunchtime.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I had to go into DCU with someone yesterday and when parking in the multistorey, we had to go all the way to the top just to find a space - and even then it was already half full. And this was just before midday on a Friday, I can only wonder how bad it would be every other day of the week.

they open the overflow when the multistorey is full. ive always found parking on campus, but whether in the free carparks, multistorey or overflow depends on the time i arrive.

Anyone know how the free car parks are snow wise? Will they be open tomorrow or will it just be the multi-story?

Hope the paths around campus are clearer than the ones on the street, its pretty slippy out there!

Cheers, was a couple of hours ago when I last checked my email. Parking will be tricky enough to get so!

actually its a good idea not to go into car park two, saw a few cars get stuck and have to be pushed out there this morning.
