Central pressure has dropped to 955 mbs, the lowest recorded in the past century or longer in Minnesota. It matches other historic lows in storms such as the great blizzard of Jan 1978 where the lowest pressure was about 950 mbs near southern Lake Huron.

This low is only crawling along at about 10-15 mph, towards the north. If it had been moving at the usual 40-50 mph, winds might have been even stronger but as things stand, gusts to about 60 mph have been reported in parts of SD, MN and WI and out over Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

There have also been some damaging tornadoes in states from MI south to Alabama with Tennessee appearing to be hardest hit so far.

The temperature out ahead of the front reached 80 F in western PA which is about 25-30 degrees above normal. (in C that would be 27 and 14-16 above normal).

Rainfalls of about 2-4 inches are being reported north of the low in far northern MN and northwestern Ontario into southeast Manitoba. Snow is falling well to the west as arctic air is not rushing into the circulation, but is held back to the west of the MB-SK border and into northwest North Dakota.

This snow could become heavy later and some areas may get 15-30 cms although this will be in a narrow band north-south to the west of the stalled arctic front.

A smaller scale similar event hit us last March 30th... remember the 10c to 12c over the SE of Ireland and snowfall later that evening?
