Replacing floors in house

    Hi guys,

We're going doing extensive re-modelling on our humble semi d and it will involve replacing the current ground floor (some of it is rotten etc etc).

I am keen to get a wooden floor with some character and I am wondering if it is possible to lay reclaimed floorboards directly on the joists of the house or would I have to have a plywood floor or something beneath it?

    Many thanks :)

Floorboards were laid directly on joists for years so it wont do you any harm (unless they're badly warped or rotten?!)

However, if it was my house I'd put 18mm ply on top of the joists first. Then screw fix the floorboards through the ply into the joists. My personal preference - might cost you a little bit extra for the ply but its a good, robust solution.

Are you planning on insulating the ground floor?

Hmm, my husband has mentioned it, there's a large cavity below the floors - 3 ft or something. If it was to be insulated would you need an air gap between it and the floor boards?
