Paying VRT on imported vehicle

Since the NCT took over the inspection of imported vehicles, has anyone here gone through the process?

The declaration form is very confusing - there's one part that states 'EU Type-Approval Directive/s' and gives two boxes - one for 'M1 Vehicles Only' the other 'Non M1 Vehicles Noise/Emissions'. I've looked up the relevant EU directives but still have no clue on what they're looking for here.

Separately, does anyone know if you bring along the VRT on the day of the inspection? Should I just get a draft in the amount I expect to pay based on the calculations on the Revenue website?

    All help appreciated.

Hi, old thread but I'm looking at tracking down and answer to that same question.

Did you ever work it out?

    Hi

TBH I can't remember. I do remember that because my car was treated as a 'special case', it was a high-spec Volvo XC90, it wasn't on the VRT database and had to be manually inspected at an NCT centre. I was then sent out an assessment of the VRT due. Which you should always appeal in any event

My car was also not on their data base and I was sent home to await a call from Shannon with a value, the online calculator is only a guide, I asked the guy behind the counter and he said most people coming into the center are told to go home and wait for a valuation. You dont have to bring your car back to the center once they have seen it the first time, Also once you pay you can ask them to print number plates for you there and then.

I brought one in last year and had no issue with VRT in the centre. I just brought my English documents , made an appointment , filled out the form and went down. They took a quick look at the car , brought me back inside, I paid them and went and got my Irish plates. Took 20 minutes when I got there.

    Cheers @navanman123

Yeah I'm hoping there'll be no issues, have a car reserved which I'm flying in on Weds to collect.
Dealers already sent me a scan of the V5 document so managed to see that most of the information is listed there.

It's more down to the fact that the NCT and VRT paper work isn't clear what some of the fields are.
No examples etc, e.g. what on earth was the 'EU Type-Approval Directives' ask?
But that looks to be listed on the V5.

I think once I've completed the process I'll write up my own "idiots guide" in case it simplifies it for the next person.

There's already a guide and lots of recent experience in the pinned thread in the buying subforum. Read those for more guidance.
