I'd have to throw my hat in the ring here for Andy Serkis. He has given some great performances over the last few years as an actor but for simply for his work in King Kong and Lord of the Rings I'd have to say I think he is the best. Technically those roles and the work he put into it we're astounding...

Personally, I think Vincent Cassel is the best actor working today. He was simply breath taking in both Mesrine installments recently, and has put in a string of outstanding performances all the way back to the impeccable La Haine. He has several promising roles coming up aswell, including one in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

Yeah I like Him... He was also the only decent thing about Ocean's Twelve.

    Kang-ho Song

I thought he was fantastic in Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and Memories of Murder, but after Thrist, that sealed it for me, the guy is terrific.

I see what you're saying with Andy Serkis, but he will always be Gollum to me! I think if i was to pick the best Actor out there at the moment, I would have to go for Michael Sheen (especially for The Damned United) or Michael Fassbender (especially for Inglorious Basterds).

As for best Actress, it's a lot harder to pick but I think ellen Page is pretty good and one to look forward to in the future. Just look at Juno & Inception to see what i mean.

Going out on a limb here because it's going on just two perfermances. The Green Mile and Moon - Sam Rockwell. His performance in Moon was the best single performance I've ever seen.

De Niro is still working so he's gotta be mentioned for his early work.

I think Tom Hardy deserves a mention, although i'm mainly going on his role in Bronson.

If this were Facebook I'd hit the like button on that one, Sam Rockwell is very very cool.

    Rockwell is up there alright.

But when you're talking about the BEST actor around, one who is not only still alive but is also still working and putting in incredible performances, the best actor on the planet has to be..............

    Daniel Day-Lewis!

    What he said!!!
Moon was one of my fave films of last year, it was a bit of a hidden gem but Sam Rockwell was outstanding in it.

Jaysus I forgot about Daniel Day Lewis and I agree with your post entirely. Even his look in his films is totally convincing never mind the actual acting. How can anyone top his performance as Christy Brown.

For actor i really couldn't choose but Sam Rockwell is incredible

For actress is very clear for me, Carey Mulligan. She is one of the few actors/actresses who i will see their film no matter what because they are in it.

    Ben Foster

    Don Cheadle

    Matt Damon

    Christian Bale

    Chiwetel Ejiofor

On the talentometer he's off the charts. One of the funniest comedians of all time (IMO) and great in House..... but far from the best actor in the world!

Inception really put Tom Hardy on the global map.
He was quality in Bronson, although I wasn't a massive fan of the movie itself. And even in the smaller role in RocknRolla he was good, the scene in the car with Gerard Butlers character was classic.

Sam Rockwell in Moon was fantastic. He's always been likeable, even in lesser movies like Matchstick Men a few years ago, and as mentioned Wild Bill in Green Mile.

Ed Norton hasn't blown me away recently, but has always been one of my favourites with movies like Fight Club, American History X and Death To Smoochy in his archive. He has put in some less that admirable performances though (But if De Niro and Pacino got away with Righteous Kill, he deserves a pass or two)

I watched Thirst and seen him in The Host too, I've yet to see the others you've mentioned, but he is very good indeed.

    Johnny Depp.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned him.
But there are still many great actors: Morgan Freeman, Jack Nicholson, Kevin Spacey, Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, Brad Pitt, and list continues...

Have to agree Sam Rockwell is really talented and loved Moon.

Daniel Day Lewis totally blew me away in There Will Be Blood

Viggo Mortenson is great in The Road and seems to really get immersed in his roles

Andy Serkis is brilliant, mad but can't wait to see him again as Gollum!

Meryl Streep is wonderful, watched Out of Africa again the other day

Love Kate Winslet as well, not just interested in looking pretty on screen

Kevin Spacey is very talented too, hope to see him in something good soon!

    Male:
    Javier Bardem
(Not for his peformance in that implausible, repetitive, over-rated "No country for Old Men)
Daniel Day Lewis, of course. Also, Tom Robbins, Johnny Depp

    Female:
    Kristen Scott Thomas, Juliette Binoche

    Male - Sean Penn
    Female - Toni Colette

    Both terribly under-rated, imo.

You mean 2 time Oscar winner and 5 time nominee Sean Penn? He's not under-rated! But he is DEFINATELY one of the best actors around and probably my favourite behind DDL!

I agree about Toni Collette though, she's under-rated!
