I'm off to the states tomorrow. Leave Dublin at 10am - stopover for 2 hours in Atlanta and then on to Los Angeles. I'll arrive in LA at 6pm local time, which is about 2am my time. I don;t want to be exhausted when I get there as I've stuff to do that night, but I'm sure it will be hard to stay up. What is the best way to do it? I was thinking maybe stay up really late tonight, I'll be up at 6am anyway, and then try to get some sleep on the plane? What is the best way to do it?
    Thanks

don't drink any coffee till you arrive maybe. then when you get there have some coffee or a red bull, try to stick it out for a few hours till maybe 9.

6pm is not such a bad time to arrive at a place. arriving in a place and having a whole day ahead of you is the worst

Ok cheers. Would I not be better off trying to get a bit of sleep, on the second leg even? I hate sleeping on places but my mum gave me some sleeping pills so I might try to get a few hours in, otherwise I might be banjaxed the next day! And I have a big drive ahead of me!

The key to beating jetlag is getting yourself in tune with your new local time as soon as possible. If you take a sleeping pill on the plane and sleep for hours, you won't sleep that night and you will just prolong the jetlag.

If you are up early, you will probably find that you will doze for a little while on the plane anyway. When you arrive, try and stay up as long as you can (til 10pm or 11pm if you can manage it) you should then wake the next morning fairly fresh and tuned into local time.

Try and avoid alcohol and coffee on the plane and keep as hydrated as possible. This should also help. Enjoy your trip!

This really helps a lot, I used get soemthing caffeiney or alcohol on planes and since I stopped I feel a lot better.

If you want to take a short nap on the plane make yourself as comfortable, I find those inflatable neck pillows great, and always bring earplugs and an eyemask. look a bit silly, but it's more comfy!

Generally sleeping tablets would be better use on a night flight.

An exit seat would be helpful if you can get it. Stay hydrated as mentioned. Safe travelling!

A bottle of red wine with your dinner. Works for me, everytime!

Once you get to LA stay up late, not an all nighter but don't get to bed as soon as you arrive.

You will find youself waking up very early the next morning LA time, as you will still be on Irish time (+8) but it will soon work itself out of your system.
