TV advertising

    Hi All

Recently got a call from someone acting as agent for TV3 offering some advertising on Christmas Day.

Our company has little/ no history of advertising on TV

Just wondering what do people think of the price as follows for TV3 (remember, Christmas Day):

"5k will get you approx 25 x 20 second spots across the day (from 10am to 11:30pm)

Note, RTE take no commercial breaks on Christmas Day.

Price INCLUDES cost of making the ad"

It's cheap on Christmas day as most people have spent all their money, so it's not a day in high demand for advertising for most retailers. People will start spending again in Jan sale, but that's a long way off from Christmas Day.

On the plus side, I imagine the number of viewers is much higher on Christmas day than most other days?

Then again, as RTE don't do any advertising, maybe everyone watching TV3 will just be flicking over to RTE as soon as ads come on?

Now, I realise that all in all it's not the best day to be advertising (or the best channel). BUT when I compare the price per ad (200euro +VAT), that's slightly LESS than I'd pay for a HALF PAGE ad in a local newspaper.

And also, am hoping to get the price down a bit (maybe to 4K).

Anyone got experience in TV advertising - how does this compare?

That strikes me as incredibly cheap. Perhaps you should contact TV3 and confirm it?

yes, it struck me as cheap also. Though I've no experience in TV advertising

Have you any experience in this area?

Isn't Christmas day the one day of the year when everyone in the country watches tv???

yes! and have pointed that out as the plus side.

But it won't really matter if you're trying to get people into your store. If they see it but have no intention of spending for another while - is it really worthwhile? Are they going to remember by the time January comes around?

Of course, if your intention is just to get your brand on TV and putting it out there, then this is undoubtedly a great deal. But that's not our intention - we want direct sales from the ad.

    gavney1 - note(s) of caution:

Don't know anything about you business so I try and be broad.

TV advertising is not the holy Grail of Brand building in many cases - do go on the TV 'coz you can'

Christmas Day: Unless its a call to action you advertising - forget it: ie "Sale Starts 10pm St Stephens Day" or "log on this week and redeem a 30% discount voucher - limited to the first 1,000" etc etc etc.

Brand building on TV is ok - but, i'd certainly avoid that element in that day - food, drink, distractions - think about it

25 slots - I can tell you that their regulars are going to get the prime spots and you will be fillers - I assume they will have a "big one" of some sort on the night - you you really think your going to be there along with Harvey Norman et al.

An agent for tv3? Check that one out - if your still keen and you go direct to the station you'd never know what you can get.

Use your money for when you actually need to advertise - not when TV3 have spare capacity. There is a reason it's 'cheap' - but is it good value for you/your business?

How long between Christmas Day and your next trading day. People have short memories.

Yes, some wise words there I think. Thanks

don't worry though - wouldn't be advertising on TV just 'coz we can'. Business is tough enough as it is at the moment for us without throwing wreckless idiocy into the mix!!

Christmas Day is on a Saturday this year. Stephen's Day is the Sunday. We haven't decided if we'll open on Stephen's day this year yet. That will partly depend on whether we decide to go ahead with a Christmas Day ad.

Assuming we DON'T though, and will just be open on the Monday (27th) - we will have some special offers prepared to coincide with the ad for that week.

Forgetting all that though, blue4ever - I gather you have some experience in the area. If we were to look at this as a purely "brand-building" exercise - is the price reasonable do you think?

I'm wary of spending 4 or 5K on this. However, I'm even more conscious of the fact that we advertise weekly in 5/6 different local newspapers at an average of about 400euro each (for half page ads), and don't seem to get much (if any) return.

I'm now thinking that at least if we advertised on TV3 on Christmas day, we'd at least be putting our name out to more people(and through a different medium and to different types of customer)- even if we get no direct return.
