    hey,

i copied all my photos from my old laptop (windows xp) to my iomega HDD and was going to connect it to my new mac book pro...however, when i did this before with a flash drive, some files went missing. are you able to use a portable hdd to transfer files from a windows computer to a mac?

should it be safe enough to do this as all my family photos are very important to me obviously.

Wise to back them up to DVDs so, that way you'll always have copies safely stored, that won't crash, get corrupted etc

Yes, the HDD will be R/O if NTFS and R/W if it's FAT32. I swap files back and forth between Windows and Mac all the time with an external HDD.

If the whole drive is NTFS, you won't be able to write to it on the mac, however there is a facility on Windows to shrink the drive which allows you to reclaim some space, you then partition the drive into two drives, one containing the existing files and the new one will be empty, you then format the new partition as FAT32, that would give you the ability to transfer large amounts of data in either direction since the mac can write to a FAT32 partition.

Don't know how you managed to lose some files on the flash drive, I assume you mean what's commonly called a USB memory stick - never had any problems with this type of transfer.
