I drive a car which has tinted windows all round except the windscreen. Its a very light tint as I can see clearly out of it at night but because its silver its very difficult to see into the car during the day. Whats the legality surrounding this if I go to get my car nct'd? Would it be a fail? As ive been stopped a good few times by gardai and they have mixed views on the windows

As far as I know your front windows must let in 65% light in and manufacturers don't make tint that light.

Bring it in for the test, if it isn't legal it will fail. You can keep it on the back windows, the front windows are only restricted to let in 65% of light.

Just guessing but I would say the NCT would fail for a front window if it was difficult to see into the car. One reason is that it may be considered dangerious is when other drivers (or cyclists and pedestrians) cannot make eye contact with the driver at junctions or zebra crossings etc. Also the Gardai like to be able to see into the car (and eyeball the driver) without stopping to roll down the windows at every checkpoint.

I never found out how much light it lets in but i guess it depends on what side of the glass your looking from, ill bite the bullet and apply for the nct so... Cheers for the replies :)

Hey, just too let you know, I failed the NCT because of my front window tints (driver and passenger doors) a couple of weeks ago, however I just had to take the tints off within a month and go back and show them at the NCT centre that they had been taken off - no appointment was needed and no re-test charge! Just passed it as soon as they seen i had removed the tints!

So it's worth chancing it to see if they are light enough to pass it!:D
