Taxing a van as private. Is there going to be any problem bringing a van to the NCT?

My van is due for tax this month, it's currently taxed as a commercial (I bought it with 8 months commercial tax). I don't have a vat no. to tax it as commercial myself, so I'll be paying the full private tax on it. So obviously instead of getting the DOE test, now I will have to get the NCT test on it. Does anyone know if there will be any problems when I bring the van to the NCT centre, do I have to do some kind of change over or anything like that? It's only a small van.

You'll probably have to pay the VRT on it...

    Really! Why?

vans are generally sold as commercial vehicles & are exempt from VRT - as far as I know. When they are used by a private individual they are treated like a private vehicle & vrt must be paid...

I'm guessing there will be loads of cases like mine because of the developments regarding the taxing of commercial vehicles. I'll just have to see what happens at the tax office desk!

Afaik most of the tax offices are taxing vans no bother. The longer you leave it the better because they will be forgetting about it. If you could wait until after the budget when the civil servants get a big pay cut they will be pixxed of with the goverment and break the rules..;)

It won't need an nct, it will need a doe, The testing of a vehicle is based on the type of vehicle and not on the use.

I emailed the RSA myself regarding this, the reply is posted here:

Haha I like your logic, you may not be too far of the mark. As far as I know and I stand to be corrected people are still taxing vans commercially regardless of circumstances. If it were myself I'd just play dumb and go in ready to tax it commercially. If they don't you could just perhaps say you don't have enough money on you and go to another motor tax office in your county. Chances are one of them will tax it comercially for you I reckon.

I've talked to the guys in the tax office with regards to this and if the vehicle is currently registered as Commercial then they will have no problem renewing your commercial tax. They only need you to sign the declaration of commercial use (including business Reg number etc) if you are trying to get the vehicle's use changed, say from private to commercial or vise versa.

So I said "Great stuff, I want to tax my commercial use van now so"
    She laughed

Please , please, check your facts before posting incorrect information such as this!

There is no extra VRT payable by private individuals when taxing a commercial vehicle, privately.

VRT is payable on all motor vehicles, on date of first registration in the State, both private and commercial. The rate of VRT and amount of VRT is determined by the structure of the vehicle, not it's use (commercial or private).

Just go and tax it as normal , if they ask for a vat number like they do in clondalkin, write down your pps number in the vat number section. Worked for me and friends.
