I'm on EI 246 tonight, and was just looking on Dublin Airport's site and it says that there's an Icelandair flight in from Keflavik tonight.

    Arrival
    Keflavik Icelandair FI1510 25-10-2010 20:20

    Departure
    Keflavik Icelandair FI1511 25-10-2010 21:05

    Any reason?

I'll try and get some pics of it if I can.

For years Icelanders would head to Dublin on shopping trips for Christmas and a bit of sightseeing in a country that is actually green and has trees unlike their own. These charters would start in October. The flights were empty going back and travel agents here would do deals for Irish people going in the reverse direction.

Me and my wife took advantage of that a few years ago. I would definitely recommend it as a trip. Quite amazing scenery particularly in Winter. Quite amazing price of a pint of beer too.

Obviously the traditional charter season has started up again. I don't know if it's Icelanders coming to shop anymore but it's still an expensive country to live in so I imagine it's still worth their while. At one stage all over Dublin you would see signs in Icelandic and Iceland flags all over the place. It seems half of Iceland would make the trip.

despite its name Iceland is not covered in ice quite the opposite actually. its like Ireland last Christmas. green but really cold. Greenland is the place covered in ice:D

As it happens our arrival coincided with a snowstorm and freezing conditions. Late October early November I think. We thought it was normal but the Icelanders explained it was unusual so early in the year just like it would be in Ireland. Let me tell you it was pretty icy when we were there. It definitely added to the interest.

I had hoped to see some F15s in Keflavik airport but the bad weather put paid to that. But I was pleased to find our hotel was the airport hotel in Reykjavik and had a good view over the airfield. A woman on trip turned out to be a PPL and she managed to organise a flight over Iceland with a local contact. That must have been interesting.

As for it being green, well not really, more a brownish drab green unless it's completely black volcanic rock, which it mostly is. It's a different planet almost. The Icelanders joke: 'What you do do when you get lost in an Icelandic forest?' Answer: 'Stand up'.

Well you have to be there.:P

Icelandair offer amazing deals -ex LHR. We went to Iceland for a thre night stay January 2009 for 289 STG including hotel and direct flights on Icelandair(a full service airline).

We rented a 4wd jeep there with studded tyres. If I were to go back I would definately rent a jeep again.

We wanted to see the Northern Lights but did not do our research. Apparantly the sun's activity was at it's 11 year lull. Indeed, the sun is pretty quit at the moment on a more long term trend. Therefore the aurura borialis is not very evident at the moment. However, it's peak will be half way through the aforemantioned 11 year cycle : i.e. 2014.

The Blue Lagoon is wonderful too :)
