Canon 30D - Error 99 on 17-85USM Lens - where to get repaired?

Just started getting the dreaded Error 99 on my camera the other day after I had it with me for an event. I left it in the boot of the car overnight during a camping trip, and while it was cold it didnt get wet etc. Next day, started getting Error 99 on the camera.

Doing a bit of testing, it only seems to happen on my 17-85USM lens (I have a 75-300mm USM lens also and that seems fine). Also, it only seems to happen with the zoom is close to being fully retracted. When I extend the zoom out beyond 35mm it seems fine, anything below that and it give me the Error 99. Also, noticed that the "shutter click" is shorter and less prominent when I get the Error 99.

Does anyone know where to get this fixed in Ireland? Is there a Canon repair shop? I look online, but it recommends sending to the UK - which I'm reluctant to do.

p.s. I've tried cleaning the contact points etc - just in case you ask

I came across a possible fix for this. Get and old fashioned pencil with a rubber on the end of it. Clean the contacts with the rubber. It might work.

    hank you for contacting Canon.

We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulty with your Canon product.

With reference to your enquiry regarding error 99 in 40D, this error is normally caused by an error between the lens and the body. Has this problem occurred after using a different lens? To eliminate the error, we suggest that you follow the troubleshooting steps below:

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
    3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
    4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
    5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If it does, then the camera should be serviced.

If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps.

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Insert the CF card.
    3. Turn on the camera.
    4. Format the CF card in the camera.
    5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. Does the "ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
    3. Reattach your lens.
    4. Turn on the camera.
    5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. If the "ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

    Hey,
I can definitely say you have a faulty diaphragm cable and it needs to be replaced, this is an unfortunate design error that over time the cable gets folded and the electric tracks crack so when at 17-24/35mm the cable is folded and tracks seperate making it not work.

I do repairs so if you would like me to repair it for you PM me :)

Also dont worry there is nothing wrong with the body, an error 99 is a broad spectrum error that covers many sub errors including lens problems etc...
Also leaving it in the car over night was just a coincidence, this error happens with use (repetitive folding and unfolding).

Have dreaded Error 99 on my 4 year old Canon EOS-30D. All symptoms seem to indicate the faulty diaphragm problem on the EF-17-85 IS Lens. Can you help Zerohamster?
