Driving Music?

I'm ecstatically excited about the fact that I'm off to California for two and a half weeks and I'm going to be driving everywhere - something I've always wanted to do.... I'm traveling with two friends from Oz - thing is neither of them are into electronic music - I don't think they are huge music people at all - so I'm looking to get some albums on the go for the trip that we can all enjoy - not dancey stuff - maybe just some albums that are mainstream popular without being cheese/shyte - something good for long drives! Any ideas?

I went on a road trip a few years ago, Boston to North Carolina. Same as your self, a group of lads with very mixed tastes in music, so what we decided to do was, each bought a few albums in walmart or somewhere like that where their piss cheap to buy, and each took turns lisiting to our selections. worked out really well. and now when i lisitn to those albums now a days they always remind me of that trip awwwww. Thats something i try to do alot, buy an album or two when im away travelling and reminisce while listing to them again.

And you cant go on a road trip around America without this anthem.....

If I want an electronica type fix and have guests in for dinner or on holidays with the family and won't get away with techno or some experimental weirdness, I tend to go for something like The Thievery Corporation or Kid Loco - they tend to appeal to anyone/everyone and good holiday or driving music.

The Richest Man In Babylon is a great album by The Thievery Corporation, good variety and pretty upbeat.

Without a shadow of a doubt, if you're going travelling somewhere sunny with friends that aren't particularly into music but want some music that everybody is in to, the two albums you need to have with you are "Jesus Life For Children Under 12 Inches" by Kid Loco and "Big Calm" by Morcheeba. I'd be absolutely shocked if you had any complaints with those two.

Scubadevil got in before me with the Kid Loco though.

Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast excellent choice too.

as is Kings of Convenience although I probably prefer the Whitest Boy Alive. The lead singer from both bands is Erlend Øye, the guy that did the vocal on Röyksopp's Poor Leno.

To be quite honest, I found the standard of radio over there to be way better than the dross that passes for mainstream radio over here. That could be a plus for your trip as your companions won't feel it's your music being forced on them.

If you're doing the Big Sur drive on route 1 though, you will need some backup for when the radio signal disappears.

Two of my all time favourite albums. And coincidently, two of my first albums.

The Happy Mondays album was produced by Paul Oakenfold. I love that album but Shaun Ryder's vocals can be a bit off putting for some. I love it though.

I have to say that the Stone Roses album really has not stood the test of time for me... I loved it back then and blasted it out many times over the years but in more recent years it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I think I've listened to far too many drunks at parties destroying it!

I've been listening to Spiritualized since back then too but never get sick of them, Lazer Guided Melodies and Ladies & Gentleman being the two top albums.

Happy Mondays still gets the odd spin, tend to pull that one out early summer for driving... so yeah, a perfect one for Colly in California.
