Hope i've put this thread in the right place,
basically i used to run a fair bit a couple of years ago, did a few 10k's and a half marathon. i gave up because my doctor recommended to because i started trying to conceive and running is high impact. Anyway here i am a year later still not pregnant and ive had one miscarraige. I really miss running and am wondering if you think it would do any harm to run 3-4miles slowly (9-10min miles) twice a week and then do one swim? ive just been doing loads of walkin for the last year and to behonest think running would help clear my mind of all that comes with trying to conceive with no joy.
Anyway im just looking for advise or personal stories etc. I always thought it was ok to run if u were always a runner, but i stopped because i was trying to do everything to dr's orders! Now i havent been running so think it may be detrimental..? but just miss it so much! :(

I'd ask your doc again or get a second opinion. If you aren't running he/she should be giving you a reason why you shouldn't be. Plenty of runners get pregnant while training and continue to train throughout their pregnancy so it seems strange that your doc would recommend you don't run unless you have an underlying medical condition.

Might be worth having a read of the Runner's World women's forum - there are a lot of women on there who are pregnant or trying, and still running.

    Thanks,
No underlying condition - only reason given was that it was too high impact to start when trying to conceive.
I will read that forum thanks cos it does seem a little extreme to me. Im fed up

I'd get a second opinion. Seems strange to me that running would affect your ability to conceive.

Definitely. If anything I would have thought it would improve your ability to conceive, given that it would help you to relax. I'm not a doctor though so what do I know.

Wow I find that advice from your dr amazing if you have no underlying condition and are a habitual runner. I would have always believed that good exercise like running would only be a benifit to you as your overall health would be better and stress levels lower. I definately agree you should get a second opinion.

I fell pregnant on my first child within days of doing a marathon, my friend recently fell pregnant and she had been doing 5 training runs a week plus did a pb on a 10miler whilst she must have been a week gone. I personally believe running would improve your chances of concieving. Its really unfortunate that you had a miscarriage but I dont for one instant believe it would be related to exercise.
best of luck & running promotes happy hormones!so keep going I reckon! :D

Thank you all for your responses :)
Ive just been out cheering on the dublin marathon runners and have now no doubt that no bad could ever come from running for me! Was hard not to run along with them!!! Not sure ill ever do a marathon (purely out of laziness :p) but def need my running shoes back on where they belong!! There is a risk of serious insanity otherwise!! And pregnant or not it has to pay to be fitter!
I think i had a bad experience with my gp and will leave it at that, Trying to conceive can take years for some people and i dont think sacrificing running will make a difference for me considering all of your responses.
Thanks again for your help, maybe ill come back with success stories from running and pregnany soon...i hope so :D
