I am currently a 20yr old male learner permit holder and i want to buy this 2005 Peugeot 206 1.1litre engine
    no-image-large.gif

The insurance on it would cost me 2530 compared to the same experience as a female,it would cost 1200!!. They say that a man is more at risk to having a crash than a woman, yet it's woman that are,in my opinion, worse drivers than males are  .This is the best quote i can get for this car,It's ridiculous.

Some, even many, women may not be good at parallel parking and might suffer from fender benders. However, they tend to drive less and have less serious* accidents and cost the insurance companies less in claims. That is why their policies are cheaper.

OP, I'm afraid you won't do much better than that quote. I am studying to become an actuary at the moment, who decides upon the premium of various types of insurance. The reason men are charged more is because insurance companies have to pay out more to males than females. They base it on past data as well as a lot of different factors!

People can complain about lack of equality all they like, but the insurance companies can charge any price they like for insurance. Some will even quote insanely high prices because they don't actually want to insure you.

Trust me, as an 18yo male with a Full Licence, I know how expensive insurance can be. I am paying around the 'female' figure you quoted above, but that's as a named driver.

It's never nice to be paying for other people's mistakes, but that's how insurance works. My advice would be to ring around as many insurance companies as you can and see who gives you the best deal. Literally sit down with the phone book in front of you, and keep ringing. I would take online quoting systems with a pinch of salt - it's much better to ring up and ask.

    Good luck!

My friend used one of those online quoting systems to find I think the 5 best insurers according to the quoting website, then rang them up in person. They were a bit cheaper over the phone, but the quoting system was handy as it narrowed the range of providers down alot.

    I think it's a disgrace really.

Unfortunatly OP you'll either have to get a smaller car .i.e Yaris, Micra or just pay €2530. My first quote at 23 cost me €1550 and that was with a full license! Thankfully I haven't crashed the thing yet so my last quote was down to €710.

And apply for your test now, even if it's not 6 months old you can still apply!

Funny they would even quote you, considering it's the definition of a woman's car.

how many young male drivers are killed every weekend... how many female drivers are killed every weekend..

I'm a young male driver who drives sensibly so I think but the other 90% of lads are invincible on the roads and are such good drivers that they can drive at 100000 mph and they won't crash...

Look at the numbers of crashes and come back here and tell me who's the better drivers - men or women...

It's unfair on those of us that are actually trying to keep the rules of the roads but how many young lads do you know that just don't give a ****e basically....

I am not being sexist whatsoever,i am just saying that the difference between a men's and woman's car insurance is too much.I would understand if there is 400 or 500 in the the difference due to "statistics",but 1300 is far too much. These statistics that you speak off,are probably written by woman anyway.
If you want to talk about beng sexist, woman are the ones who are given more benifits than men,not just for car insurance, but for everything else, child benefit under any circumstances

But i even rang the various insurance companies whats the difference in costs between male and females who have the exact same status as myself and it's the same huge difference in cost.
2530 is the best i can get.

I would actually consider a Peugeot 206 suitable for both genders :p

Maybe they give higher insurance quotes for bad, bad looking cars regardless of gender......

What do you mean people like me?.It's as if you are saying that all young male drivers are terrible drivers.I am a exception to that.I have gone out of my way to get 27 driving lessons to minimise the chance of causing an accident.I would not be one of those learner drivers who drive unaccompanied like 80% of people.I would have my dad with me at all times!!! who has over 20 years experience with no penalty points and still has his no claims bonus.
As regards your quote:"cars like that" It's a 2005 peugeot 206 1.1 litre engine,Whats wrong with that?.It's not a high performance car like a Honda Civic or somethin like that.A Peugeot 206 is a very common car that alot of drivers drive in,both male and female

What you are saying is nonsense!.You can't judge a quote based on looks. It's about the type of car, peugeot 206 1.1 litre engine. It's not a Merc or a BMW .Persides i don't think they can see what your car looks like, and even if they do know what it looks like,it comes down to specification.

You make alot of sense but i would not drive a Yaris(womans car) or a Micra(womans and Granny's car). I rather drive my dad's old 87 Nissan Bluebird than a Yaris or a Micra.I am going to view the car again tomorrow so i will make up my mind pretty quickly on it. I think i might just wait to get my full license and then buy a car :D

We all had to pay high prices for being young men. Its us that do the damage, especially driving those types of boy racer body kit cars. If you like the 206 so much op, would you not think of buying a regular one, without all the body kit stuff? If you really like the boy racer look, would you not go for a male car? No offence, but that 206 kinda looks like a boy racer car for boy racers who accelerate with the left boot!

I think your right. To be honest i haven't even looked at the car yet and the more i look at it,the more i dislike it,but do you really think that it would make a difference, cost wise,to get a regular 206 than this car?
I think i might just wait to get my full license and then get a car due to the huge difference in insurance cost between a learner permit holder and a full license holder.

Actually, I suspect that its mostly men in the well paid actuarial jobs and women in the minimum wage call centre jobs.

But they get paid less and get screwed over when it comes to private pensions. Oh, and child benefit never covers the cost of having a child.

This is good. Honestly, thank you.

Thats what a lot of people think.

    Have look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence

It can be argued that stages 1 and 2 can be swopped. You are at a second stage of "Unconscious Incompetence" - you have the basic skills, but you don't know that there are specific things that you can't deal with.

Very true and they're constantly viewed as sex objects by men. It isn't a bed of roses for women either :(:(
