    Lost my car keys...s**t buzz!

Anyway I found the vin number and was quoted 240 for a new key by an opel dealer (drive an 04 opel corsa btw). Is this a rip off price? I'm a college student and 240 quid would buy me food for a year. Does anyone know of a cheaper way to get a key made?

    Thanks for any replies.

Go to any locksmith and they can do it for about €20 but its the immobiliser that makes it expensive €240 is about right (too much - yes! but correct)

Not trying to be smart but having a spare is essential - were you going around with just one key - no spare?

Same as above, any decent locksmith can cut keys for practically any make at a fraction of dealer prices. Unless it's a fancy chipped key or similar you should be fine. As for any alarm or immobiliser issues, it might just be possible to by pass or deactivate that for the moment. Maybe get 2 keys cut while you're at it?

    Best of luck.

jesus sounds like i was done good and proper last year, i lost the one and only key i got with my car last year.... i shopped around loads of toyota dealers and the cheapest i was quoted (and had to go with ) was 1200 euro ... i couldnt believe it but i tried tons of toyota dealers here in the south and up north and 1200 was the cheapest.... it was told it was cause of the central locking that it cost so much... jesus i coulda killed someone last year...

240 sounds realistic (maybe not reasonable unfortunately) to me to be honest,
i know someone else that was quoted 250 for replacing a key to a cheverolet last year....

    sorry!

    Hey thanks for the replies.

The car is second hand and only came with one key so yes i really should have got a spare made...lesson learned.

Are you sure a locksmith can make one from scratch? Will they need the vin code or anything in particular? Ill ring around in the next few days but think ill rummage through my bins first!

    Thanks

I work in an Opel Dealership in the parts department would be charging about €140, thats for new key and remote buttons and programming might be a bit dearer if we had to get the codes online, you could get a non remote key cheaper too.. A good locksmith will be able to cut and program one for less again
