Has anyone heard that the place went bust?

Maybe there's a few peeps here who have trained with the INTA. The centre has been in existence since the early 80's so it would be sad to see it go.

    Any info?

they stopped accepting monthly fees start of October - due to problems with getting the rent reduced along with a falling membership.

Thats a shame.had my first MA experience there(a long time ago!).Mind you it was a very central spot.

I used to train there for a while after moving to Dublin. Lovely spot - but the fees were a bit steep. Not surprising though, as they're in the heart of Dublin.

I trained there from 1985 to 2002 and I dont have a bad word to say about it. Brendan & Gerry are great instructors and they have done a lot for TKD in Ireland. I haven't been in touch for a few years but it would be sad to see it go if the rumour was true. However I'm sure they would have no problem getting another great club together.

Yes, I heard this a couple of weeks ago, couldn't believe it. Apparently, they just can't afford the rent anymore, and can't seem to get a reduction on the rent etc. They tried to increase the fees I heard, in an effort to save the place, but to no avail...Although, I only trained there coming up to the BB grading, it's hard to imagine the place not being there - it's a bit of a landmark and so central in town.

Not sure what the future might be, I'm sure there'll be some announcement on the inta website when it finally closes...

Unfortunately it looks like it may be going as they are only taking fees by the week at the moment. Pity as it was an institution for not just TKD but lads from kickboxing, weight training etc used to train there. AFAIK it was one of the first all purpose Martial Arts gyms with a fulltime matted area, weights, bags, sauna etc in the country. Indeed their was a few serious lads who trained in there down the years. Brendan and Gerry were some operators themselves and ran the gym very professionally.

What has done most damage to membership has been the fact that the cost of parking in this area just off Grafton St is say €3/4 an hour. Train for 2 hours 3 times a week that's €20+ a week, 50 weeks of the year and your looking at nearly an extra €1,000 a year, which in these times is the kind of money people do not have to spend.

If it does close I will be very sorry to see it go, as I said it was an institution in Dublin, it's been going since around 1981 I think, I have great memories from it. Doubtless Gerry and Brendan will set up again but where about is anyone's guess.
