    Hi Guys,

just looking for a bit of help as regards changing the color of this car. I am trying to just figure out photoshop a bit more and this is one of the things that just has me very stuck.

What is the best way of changing the color of it? I have been trying to use 'Replace Color', but just dosnt work out for me.

    Any advice wanted.

    Thanks alot,

    Paddy

    seems very quick and dirty.
i suppose you could spend a bit of time doing it and get a good selection of the car, excluding the windows.

Ideally the car should have a colour that is independent of the rest of the image.
A red, green or blue car is easily changed using the hue saturation. The white of the car makes this more challenging.

The first thing you'll have to do is make a good selection of the body work to isolate it. You can use the selection tools for this but I would reccommend a vector mask. Although difficult to master vector masks give much better results..

Now to add the colour in a realistic way is tricky. I've attached my quick, rough, effort.
    attachment.php?attachmentid=133057&stc=1&d=1288462890

You'll notice my patchy mask. :)

So add red colour to the white I removed white from the other colour channels. With my selection enables (you should save it) I used a curves adjustment to darken the white paint work in both the blue and green channels. So instead of (255 255 255)ish = white you get (255 30 30) = reddish.

You may need to tweak the darkening a few times. The whole point is to retain the lighting detail in these channels to keep things looking realistic.

If red isn't what you want you can now easily modify the red colour by using hue/saturation. Change from "Master" to "Reds" in the dialog box and move the hue slider.

i tried doing that to my car with the guide in post 2 but lol it just doesnt work that way :)

it only wants to change the colour of the backlights rather than the whole car.

Look up Guy Gowan, photoshop guru now based in Sligo and you will love him. He has a great example on changeing a car colour. It is all about the channels....... leave colour mixer alone!

Open up Photoshop go into Camera RAW, and do it that way it would look the best

Can you be a bit more specific about the method you recommend, even give a link to which ever method your following. Did you check out the link that I suggested using the channel mixer?

Why use Camera RAW? There's nothing in there that you can't do to regular images in photoshop. Camera RAW is only really for preparing output from RAW files.

There's my shot using solid colour layers, layer modes, masks, and increase in contrast :)

Thank you, I think my Guy Gowan suggestion was falling on deaf ears there.

    1. Make your mask - spend time on it
    2. Channel Mixer
    3. Adjust colours to get what you want - You need to know your colour wheel
