Starz is developing a series about the spy and detective Allan Pinkerton.

Deadline reports that the network has ordered a pilot script for Pinkerton in the hope that it will become an eight or ten-hour series.

The show, which is being produced by Hollywood star Gerard Butler and 24 co-creator Bob Cochran, is said to focus on Pinkerton's life as the founder of the USA's first detective agency.

Pinkerton worked for the Union Intelligence Service and foiled an assassination attempt on Abraham Lincoln. His detective agency was used to track down train robbers and he developed modern spying techniques including going undercover, using mugshots, surveillance and profiling.

"He was an amazing guy," Cochran said. "He took part in all the great sweeping events of the 19th century."

Pinkerton also worked for the Underground Railroad, an organisation used to smuggle slaves to safety.

"On one hand he was enforcing the law and on the other hand he was breaking the law," Cochran said. "He was interested in right and wrong, not so much in the law."

The project is currently being developed as a limited series but Cochran revealed that he would not rule out a second season.

Starz seems to be doing everything right at the moment, what with the success of Spartacus and the upcoming Camelot. They can't lose.
