Wexford's Civil War by Seamus Mac Suain lists Wexford man Private Martin Howlett as one of 6 brothers of "A Military Family" who took up arms. He died in 1917 aged 22 but CWGC and SDGW list him as from Campile, Co Waterford rather than Wexford. Consequently he doesn't appear in Tom's book "Wexford War Dead".

His brother William joined the Free State/National Army and was killed in 1922 taking part in an assault on Executive held Waterford jail. He also died aged 22.

Mention is made of another brother John being killed during the Civil War.
18(?) year old Private John Howlett was on sentry duty at Old Gateway, Fethard, Co Tipperary and died when his rifle went off as he brought it from his shoulder to ground whilst being relieved of duty.

I think this is the family in 1901 (transcribed as Howett)

and them in 1911 (with the eldest Richard listed as a Daughter...)

Anyone any info re the possible service of Richard, Thomas and James? There is a medal card for a Richard Howlett, Irish Guards, number 6177 but no info found re this chaps service

    Hello Johnny.
My main interest is war dead, up till if I come across a man who survived I left him be, however, sometime in the future I intent re-visit the newspapers of the period and log all names recorded therein.
So the short aswer is that I have no information on men who survived at the moment, sorry.

    Hello all,

Being Rememberance Day, I thought I'd have a look to see if I could find any information about a great uncle, Martin Howlett who as it turns out is the same person who you've referred to in your posting. My grandfather was Richard Howlett, his brother, so it seems that I've come across some interesting information about our family! I've sent this posting to the attention of my father (Richard Howlett's son) to see if he could provide a bit more information about his father who served in WW1 and later became a policeman. We'll try and provide some information shortly.

Hello- just googled Martin Howlett Canada as I was looking to locate my grandfathers brother , who I met about 20yrs ago. In the process I saw the piece on the Howletts of Campile/ arthurstown Co wexford Ireland.

My Gradnfather was James (Jim ) Howlett from that area and he did have a brother (Richard I think) who went to Canada and joined the police - I met his sons Martin and Richard when I visited Montreal (approx 20 yrs ago) - My sisiter had Martins address but , after her death, I could not locate it. Jim Howlett also had another brother who, I believe, fought in the first world war and was gassed (maybe died )I am not quite sure.

I have a wedding photo which may be that of Richard Howlett who went to Canada.

If I am talking about the same familyIwould be interested to talk to people with info to try and fill some of the gaps and share some of my own stories.

    THanks

    Derek

    hi Rob,
I have some information on your grandfather, taken from records of his police service in Ireland and Palestine. I would be grateful for anything you might be able to add as I am researching a thesis on Irishmen that joined the police services in Palestine during the British Mandate era and he is one of those in whom I am interested. email me seanwgannon@yahoo.ie
