Depends on the car/truck/van you're driving and how you're driving it.

Get your cars MPG (or use an approximation)

Work it into Miles per litre.Find how many ltres needed to travel 300 miles.

Find price of diesel at the pumps per litre.

Work it out. Not too difficult ;)

80 and 90 mph! you should not be on here looking for an approximate cost for your 300 mile trip... you should be on here looking for somewhere to write a will.... try driving under the speed limit and you might save on fuel........

Taking diesel at about 1.22 per litre, about 41l for 300 miles - 9g for 300miles - 33mpg. 80-90 is way past the economy stage in a car's performance, you'd probably get closer to 50 mpg if you slowed sown to 70mph.

    Let's guess 7 l/100km (40mpg), 300 miles = 500km, so 35 litres of diesel, say 1.25, gives about €44 euros.

driving at 6 in the morning and 9 at night, If I met 5 cars id be doing well. Thanks though,

Keep your speed down to the limit or under, and you'd probably see a big difference.

I'm doing Drogheda to Tallaght in a 2 Litre Petrol Accord for €60 a week.

^^ Perfect example of why you should think in terms of l/100km.

OMG, that's like 128 - 144km/h. Factor in some error in the speedo and its more like 125 - 140km/h

Which is on a motorway. And only slightly more than normal motorway speeds. So no, he's not going to spontaniously die from going a few km/h faster on the best roads in the country, or use so much diesel that he'll be poor and homeless within 2 weeks.

The motorways are grand for 180km/h if not 200km/h. And it wont cause instant death.

55mph is the best economy speed, 40mph above that will increase fuel consumption by 20-30%.

    h. And it wont cause instant death.

    Bang oo!

To the posters who said on or under the limit:mad:

The ****ing motorway is bad enough without idiots doing 100km/h all the way trying to spare fuel, thats 10 times more dangerous than doing 15km/h over the limit.125km/h on your speedo = 120km/h, so advise him to drive at that speed.

Well its always 1.9tdi rocketships that over take me on blind bends....:)

Stop being such a tight arse, put fuel in the car when it needs it and drive at or slightly above the speed limit, anyone hypermiling at 40 Mph should be shot.

Driving a lot of motorway every day, doing about 130-140 km/h and still hgetting 50 mpg, so no need to suffer for your fuel economy.
Even at faster speeds I'd still expect at least 46 mpg from my Focus, if my mpg was 40 I'd bring the car to the garage as there would have to be something seriously wrong with it.
And there was, pipe from turbo to engine had blown.
Not even my GF manages to get it below 43 and she is a serious leadfoot!
At 40 mpg you'd either have to drive everywhere with the pedal to the metal or there is a problem somewhere if it's a TDI.
No need for terminal shotgun surgery here though IMO ;-)

    50mpg at 140km/h.

46mpg at speeds above 140km/h and if your well past 140km/h you would never even dip to 40mpg, thats some Focus

My old Fabia diesel with a nice bit more power and an extra gear ( aren't tdci focus's only 5 speed?)would be doing 1800rpm in 6th or so at 120km/h, was noticebaly heavier on fuel when past 130km/h, no way would I be getting 40mpg at near 100mph.Maybe if I was going down hill, out of gear and rolling along would I get 40mpg+ at that speed.

Some of us are trying to save fuel. Anything faster then 100kph and my consumption drops to about 18-20mpg :\

So much I can see the fuel gauge drop before my eyes :P

Anyways, all lorries are limited to 80kph and buses are limited to 100kph. There is no problem going at 100kph on the motorway

Wasn't there a thread on here recently about passing on the left on the end of a bus lane. The point was to relieve traffic and generally improve things a little?
Well there was some load of high horses replying to that post i can tell you. Lots of mentioning rules of the road and all that.
I don't see anyone mentioning rules of the f*****g road now do i?
You cant have your cake and eat it. Jesus this place makes me wonder!

The motorway is grand for that speeds. Mostly.
But the motorways users in Ireland are not.
You never know what you can expect. So you can't be doing that speed safely.

Go to Germany and drive on their motorways for a while. You'll see why it's safe there to do 200km/h and over.
People just stick to the rules 100% and don't do anything stupid.

You should nominate that car for an efficiency award, enen Ford don't claim that type of MPG. How are you measuring that mpg?

Car speedometers are definitely not the most precise devices.
And there is the law, that expect all car manufactureres, to make sure that speedometer doesn't show smaller speed then real.
Because of these, in all cars, speedometeres show speed bigger then real.
    It's ussualy 5%- 10% difference.

    I dont agree with you.

The problem on our motorways is not users doing 100kph - 119kph or people doing 121 to 140kph.
Its the ignorance of how a motorway works is the problem.

Anything below 80 is where you are beginning to have problems. (keep in mind some coaches and trucks are limited to 80)

The slower speed is only really bad when it is coupled with driving ignorance just as excessive speed coupled with ignorance is.

Back on topic and my 1.9TDI is pretty bad on juice when doing 130 - 140. Hell even 120 is at the limit I think.
I did some motorway only figures last week and I was getting 40 - 44mpg at the best. Compare that to when I did a journey of similar drive time but on N and R roads and got 55.

    With a calculator:
Thats 480 miles to a tank with the 40MPG and 660ish with 55.

I just did 540 miles to a tank after 4 hours 15 mins on a motorway and 4 hours 40 on N and R roads. Average of 47mpg

Oh, just remembered. I believe I read on TDIclub that the most economic revs for the 1.9 is 1900ish. At the speeds we are talking about they are near 3000.
