Transferring from my old laptop to my new one

I'm returning my laptop to the shop for a refund as it's not working right - they've agreed this and it's all grand. I've found another laptop that I am going to buy.

How do I take the songs/movies/files etc that I want to keep from the old laptop and transfer it to the new one, bearing in mind that for a short period i will have no laptop at all?

    Thanks

First go through your laptop and make a list of all the stuff you want to transfer. Organize it all into folders for neatness if it isn't already. Then find out how much data it is (right-click the folders and select properties).

If it isn't too much (<10GB), you could just burn it all to a DVD or two. Assuming you have a DVD burner, all you need is a few blank discs which are very cheap.

If you're talking tens or hundreds of GB, then you'd be better off with an external hard-drive.

Be sure to test any form of backup made, test it then test it again.
