My cistern has had these cracks for years and have put some type of sealer on it that kept it going but getting wet on the floor now and getting nervous. It is a standard 70s a&s one, could i still buy the same one or a plastic one and is it easy to replace.

just buy a new one. It would be easier. A new toilet will cost anywhere from 80-130 euro depending on where you shop and a plumber will charge about 80 euro to fit it. Assuming no serious issues...

Yeah, for both, but you may get away with just the cistern only, does it have a flush pipe under the cistern to the back of the toilet?

should just be able to get a low level cistern to fit the flush pipe coming from the pot

in the short term tec7 is like a silcone glue which is waterproof and can be used in water and sticks to pretty much anything and hardens.

I had a guy who has a 70's 'avocado' toilet with leaking cracks. As coloured toilets are very expensive to replace, I stripped it down and 'tanked' it with a product called Water Stop Liquid by Rito. Brilliant stuff. They sell small tins of it in Chadwicks.
Just strip down the cistern, clean and dry it and paint the Water Stop all over the inside up and past the water line (where your cistern fills to). Once dry, put it all back together and bobs your uncle!

I think the crack is to far gone now as its made its way to the top,i have visions of coming home and its split open and the house filling like a fish tank.
There is a plastic 2" sweeping 90 bend from under the cistern to the back of the toilet,i was hoping if i got something nearly the same from p j matthews with the fittings that i could replace it handy enough myself,(money to tight to mention even though ive mentioned it).

what you need is called a low level cistern, and should include a new flush pipe and wc connector

yes,we were going to change the whole suite one time and a plumber told us we couldnt just pick any old suite as ours was a low level toilet, still not sure as to what it means,is it because of the outlet pipe under the toilet or does it just refer to the cistern?,thanks for the replies and your patience guys.

this is an example of a low level toilet

this is an example of a new more modern style close coupled toilet

a low level toilet pot sits out from the wall further than a close coupled pot. the 4" sewage pipe for the c/c pot should be about 1-2" out from the wall and the sewage pipe for the l/l pot could be about 4" out from the wall so its not easy to change over if your outlet pipe is coming up from a concrete floor. If its a wooden floor then you can probably alter it below the floor. If the outlet pipe go straight out the back wall then you shouldn't have much of a problem at all.

Just to let you know how it turned out and prices etc,got low level cistern in p j matthews,35e and a few fittings with vat came to about 46e,fitted it up with a new little inlet 90 with a valve on it,smaller cistern than the other one but its fine.
Thanks for all the help and the info and the idiot proof photos,it really explained it really well for me.
P.S. Anybody short of the lid for the old one which is in good condition, give me a shout.
