As the title states, I'm heading over to the US in December and was thinking of treating myself to an Ipad wi-fi + 3g. Question is will it work over here?? The saving is about €180

It'll work fine. Don't forget to add in sales tax on top of the basic price though.

And budget for the possibility of customs wanting to have a chat when you come back.

    1. open ipad box.
    2. remove ipad from box.
    3. put ipad in travel case whatever
    4. you are now like everyone on the planet who travels with an ipad. Whats to say you just bought it, other then you drooling over it?
Just stick receipt somewhere out of the way!

Customs don't need to prove you didn't buy it in Ireland/EU - you have to prove you did.......

They have to have very good reason for believing you didn't, and an item that is readily available in Ireland, opened, and used (get it set up and download a couple of free apps before leaving the Apple Store), would give them no justifiable reason to believe you have imported it. They do in fact have to prove you likely purchased it abroad if it goes to court, so they won't take it unless they are pretty confident. To be extra safe, don't keep a hard copy of the receipt. If buying it in an Apple Store, just get them to email it to your Apple ID address, that way there will be no evidence for them to find if they carried out a search. All of which is highly unlikely for such an item in the first place.

So everyone who travels to any country must carry receipts for ALL items, electronic or otherwise that they carry with them? Balderdash!

Just brought one back as a present. Still in the box, put it through the security checks and nobody asked me anything about it.

I was wondering about the charging adapter. Is it universal or will I need an adapter? (I know it can be charged via USB on the computer btw).

Not at all. Do you have first hand experience of this?

Ah lads no customs official in the world would cause hassle about an iPad out of the box. As long as it's not sealed you'll be fine.

A simple check of the serial number will prove it it sold in the US.

Where did I say that you must carry receipts with you? If they believe it was brought in from outside the EU, they can seize it until you prove otherwise.

Years working in Customs clearance, so yes. Customs have probably the most power of any office in the State, way more than the Gardai for search and siezure etc. For the likes of a laptop they usually wouldn't bother as long as its not flaunted in front of them by still being in the box.

By the way, when traveling, and bringing in goods, you are entitled to a total value of €430, which brings it just in around a 16GB WiFi iPad, without paying Duty or VAT.
My original post was answering the one where someone claimed Customs have to prove it was brought from outside - they don't. It doesn't really matter whether you like it or not, that is the power they have. Anyway, this is all going a mile off topic, so that's my last post on the subject.

And how easy do you think that would be? They'd have to ask Apple to check it for them, and Apple aren't likely to want that much extra work to do, so they, like any other company put in such a position, would refuse unless a court order was presented. That would cost a lot more money than would be gained, it ain't going to happen. Plus, even to get the serial number, they'd need a court order because they would have to take it off you, turn it on, and search it (unless the iPad has it printed on the device itself) without your permission. It'll never happen for an iPad, they're simply too small, and barely over the limits allowed.

No, they can't. It has been established in court that the onus of proof lies with customs, not the individual, if customs are making accusations about stuff being imported. Admittedly, it was the Law Lords, but while they may not be binding within Ireland, it is very rare that their precedents aren't followed here.

To answer the question, yes it will work over here. US wifi however doesn't allow channels 12 and 13 I think, not sure if thats enforced or not. So you might have a problem with some EU routers.

Charger, just make sure it can do 230V at 50Hz. Most Apple stuff is universal.

This would be just a limitation in software in any modern wifi device. My US sourced iPad which is set up as being in Ireland works perfectly with my airport on channel 13.

That would be a logical step. I got some US Wifi gear once and it was a hardware limitation on channels. I don't think the FCC even enforce it any more.
