Right that's it, you've pushed me over the edge. Just bought IL2 and downloading from Steam now. I've heard so many people promote how good it is over the years its time to get involved.

I imagine a LOT of practice before i'm good enough to shoot anything down :)

    Here's my steps/landmarks along a near 10 year journey .

All settings to easiest and try shooting down friendly bombers (dont bother with nonsense/trivialities such as take offs and landings ,limited ammo etc !)Gun
Convergence 200m Max altitude 100-1500m (anything over 2km is for aces only right!?Sure the planes wont even do HALF their mph/kmh up there ?!)

Weeks later!(Of course ground targets can be attacked at any time )

Give the bomber pilots a chance to take evasive action ie not set to Friendly

    Then

Give the bomber gunners ammo (ie loadout NOT set to empty)

    Try shooting down friendly fighters

Try shooting down enemy fighters with their difficulty set to Novice

Try take offs with external views activated of course!(No landings yet!)

Enjoy game for a year or so !

    Try landings

Get used to dogfighting ...(assuming of course you will NEVER keep up with those mad corkscrewing enemy ace fighters !)

Decide to try Cockpit Only view (Realise its way too hard and go back to Externals)

Another 6-12 months pass -picking up a few tricks along the way -nicer stick settings ,convergence maybe down to 150m etc

Try Cockpits View Only again (feel like a complete noob all over )

Go online (feel like a complete noob all over again)

First online kill (genuine adrenaline rush)Venture up to 5km alt

    Learn about TRIM

    Track IR bought

Getting a few kills online now every month

    Convergence down to 100m

Join squad online ,comms (feel like a complete noob all over again)Learn that people actually fly and fight at 7-10km + alt in 'The real World'!!!!!

    Plenty of kills !

Wait for SOW:BOB and start all over again .

Having a joystick is essential. Would stick with spitfires in the beginning as they are the most forgiving and you don't need to worry about flaps. Tight turns will get you out of most situations. The main thing in dogfights is to get close and when aiming lead your target, ie get the gunsight ahead of the plane you are shooting at (unless directly behind him). Get some practice against ai bombers at first, then ai fighters, before moving on to online games, which are usually tough. You should be able to get in a few months practice before the arrival of storm of war.

Good info. I've been flying for about 15 years myself in various flight sims and about 15 hours in the real world so i've got the basics all down, even landings i've found quite easy so far after only a few hours in IL2. Played MSCFS1 and 2 to completion but its the online aspects of IL2 that are really exciting me. I've been flying backwards and fowards between airports in FSX for the last few years with precise realism but i'm craving some fun and skirmishes with real opponents.

I'm VERY impressed with the flight model so far in IL2, the simulation of torque, yaw and the subtle constant pitch/roll changes to keep a fighter in the air are very realistic. A few initial questions that sprung up from some playing today...what altitude do battles mostly take place at IE should I be well setup to fight at 10-20,000 ft? The missions i've tried so far have taken me fecking ages to build altitude to a point to have height and speed advantages of the AI.

Great game already, and only $15 wow!

Is storm of war coming on PC?

Download Hyperlobby. It's the best way to go online with IL2:1946. Make sure you have the 4.09m patch too.

It's a great game, and the physics are a notch beyond FSX. Try snap rolls and spins. My favourite aircraft by far is the J2M5 Raiden. Online battles will take place at 2000m and will generally spiral down to ground level. Get Track IR, I've heard it's great for this sort of sim.

Online tends to be unrealistically low altitude 1-2 km and maybe 4-6km for the real 'aces'...I once flew with a crack squad who often fought over 10km and sometimes 12/13km ...a totally different ballgame .Height is (almost) everything(lose height ,lose the fight etc ).Battle of Britain was typically fought at 20000ft ie around 6km altitude and higher ...late war Defence of the reich etc was higher still although Eastern Front was quite a lot lower ...

Cool. I'm going to practice offline for a while and get good at killing the AI before I go online I think. I'll head over to the Fighting Irish and see about joining too but with the 12 hour time difference here i'm probably better joining an NZ clan.

Edit: what mods are people using that are worth downloading?

tbh I flew with the FI for a while and they had people from other time zones flying with them, mostly from the US though

Sorry to drag a zombie thread from the depths but...

Anyone got a link to these? I installed 1946 again, but I can't seem to find where I downloaded the files, and the link is dead. It'd be a damned shame not to be able to use these anymore.
