Anyone know anything about setting up a medium sized group with of laptops/PCs?

Someone was asking me to look into it, it’s a voluntary group, looking to get 6 or so laptops. No IT experience in the group. Require broadband, have a building.
Someone mentioned to them that there’s extra charge for public license (must be Microsoft I guess), hard to believe that’s required.
Would it be best to go with an IT firm for the maintenance sake, if anyone can recommend someone let me know.

If anyone has experience with something like this let me know.

    (Midlands area)

Do you have a phone line in the building? Most people get bband through the phone line and just negotiate between Eircom, 02, Perlico etc etc to get the best deal...

If they are just six independent laptops that require Internet Access, the only Microsoft licenses you need will be for Windows 7, and the license cost will usually be included in the laptop itself.... You can have these printing, using email etc without needing a server

However if you wish to centralize files/printing/email etc etc you will need a file server.... Most likely option people would go for would be Windows 2008 Small Business Server, which costs about a grand.

The level of maintenance you require pretty much depends on how critical it is to have the system up.. As with maintenance contracts you are given a response time..
