Mods i would be very grateful if you could move this to the dental forum please i wish to go unregistered for this and i'm very sorry if it is a pain....

Hi , i was just wondering something ( i did a search found one topic but it did not really answer my question)

Is erythromycin commonly used when there is an abscess or possible abscess? Or it only used when there is an allergy to penicillin? How widely is it used?

    Many thanks

Yeah I prescribe it from time to time for those who are allergic to pen. Its a bit expensive and hard on the stomach....works well though. It pretty commonly used, if you have worries ask the person who prescribed it.

    Hope that helps a bit

As usual, agree with Fitz. Erythromycin is the most common substitute for amoxicillin in the case of penicillin allergy, when prescribing for dental infections.

Any time I've had a dental infection, I've been prescribed a penicillin type antibiotic. But mr. sudzs had an abcess recently, is alergic to penicillin and was prescribed erythromycin.

Not sure how helpful that is! :)

Amoxycillin didn't work for me, so got Erythromycin. It worked!
