Looking for a passat tdi engine

3 weeks after buying a passat 1.9 tdi with 80,000 miles the engine dies (cracked cylinder head). It came with a years warranty but this only covers to a max of €1500. I've an option of a reconditioned engine or one from a crashed car - probably cheaper, depending on mileage etc but the insurance company won't give warranty on. What do people think?

Get a recon'd one, there are so so many different 1.9tdi's with light years of miles on the things! If ya have to spend a few bob then do it. €1500 quid off the job ain't too bad, was it a main dealer?

Not a main dealer but it came with Mapfre warranty.

Did you buy it private or through a car dealer. if the latter you have an automatic 3 months warranty (whether the dealer likes it or not), As it cracked the head inside the 3 months get the dealer you bought it off to fix it. If private buy a reconditioned one unless you happen to source a genuine low mileage compatible VAG 1.9tdi which afaik doesn't necessarily have to come out of a passat (open to correction by VAG heads).

If the car was bought from a dealer who gave a third party Mapfre warranty with it then the OP is bound by the terms and conditions of that warranty which appears to include a ceiling of €1500 on any one claim.

The minimum length of the warranty is not the issue here.

OP, that is a popular car so there are lots of these engines about the place. I would go with a reconditioned engine, at least it will come with some sort of guarantee.

A quick google came back with crowd, based in Cork. Might be worth contacting them:

Thanks for the link bazz. I'll give them a call. Main dealer wants 4700 euros for a reconditioned engine besides labour. Local mechanic can do the job for 1900 including labor with an 08 tdi with 40k miles on it (risky but cheap).
