Is it possible in a timber frame house to replace an open gas coal effect fire with a solid fuel burner? The gas coal effect fires are absolutely useless and a waste of time as they give off feck all heat - essentially the heat goes straight up the chimney and doesn't radiate out into the room. There is no actual chimney on the roof, just a metal (approx 6") pipe going up through the attic and vented through the roof.
