I need help translating the poem 'An Bas" by Martin O Direain. Have tried everything so any help would be appreciated!!

Nuair a thiocfair, a bhais, ar ball,
    Tar go lach dar n-iarraidh,
Na biodh an scath id dhail:confused:
ach fag sa gcro i do dhiaidh e.

Tar mar athair ar gairm a phaiste
    abhaile o choisir go dionmhar
Oir is paisti sinn uile, a Bhais!
Is ni hail linn imeacht gan dion-bhrat.

    thanks

It is for school (my son). He did atempt it, translating individual words but overall just not making sense. We both think it's about death but lots of bits don't make sense when you translate back to English and he can't answer questions without understanding it. He spent ages at it, this was a last resource (my idea) and not a teenagers easy way out:)

    thanks
