Anybody been recently or going soon and worried about the riots over thier? Going in 3 weeks and a little worried about if it will be safe, i presume it will be but the word is a bit mad these days.

I'm going to France next week (not Paris) and I haven't for a moment had any concerns.

In three weeks time, things probably will have quietened down. If not, the things that might affect you are getting from the airport to the city -- the rail service might not be available, stuff like that. In Paris, you might find Metro services curtailed.

But you are not likely to be grabbed by rioters and taken to the guillotine. If there is a demonstration somewhere, go off and see a different bit of Paris.

    Practise your gallic shrug.

Most of the rioting is taking place in suburbs of Paris waaaay off the tourist trail.

I wouldn't be hopeful of the protests ending soon either. I'm in the south of France at the moment and there are stoppages daily and peaceful demonstrations around the place. Some days trains are curtailed, others the busses. Nice airport has no fuel, all flights in must carry fuel for the return due to the pickets on refineries.

That said it's not affecting my trip at all. I would see nomreason for Paris to be any different.

As mike said, there are no riots in Paris and in fact there has probably never been since about 1968 or so :)

Id be more worried about taxis not having any petrol :)

    or planes.

seriously, the riots are a parallel thing to the marches in the city.

The marches are peaceful are normal folks humped about the retirement age changing. And they happen in the centre.

The riots happen in the underpriviledged estates waaaay out in the suburbs where people dont even have a job to worry about the retirement age changing! They are rioting in their own areas because they are frustrated about their lack of oportunities, but being idiots they just destroy their own neighbourhoods far away from town. Nothing to worry about.

BTW: its no different in ireland where in north belfast the whole place could be going mental and city centre/ leafy suburbs of belfast are 100% peaceful.

I just spotted that the police raided a refinery early this morning and have removed the blockade so that should 'help' things.

And I also just read that since Monday 6 schoolkids (18 years old) who had been rioting are now serving 6 months in prison for throwing rocks at police and looting. It looks like Sarko is putting his foot down.
