1.4 or 1.6 would be better. The 1.2 is too little for that size of car. Could see it being a guzzler as a result too

I would have to agree with EPM. Go for a bigger engine if you want the Astra the 1.2 is as fast as a slug. I'm not saying the 1.4 is quick but its enough to pull that bulk and i say this having had one. Be warned the head gaskets like to go on these models.

Sweet jeebus, what rocket surgeon had the idea to put a 1.2 into a car of that size?
It's like making a bicycle with only 1 pedal.

The 1.2 litre Astra is rare (for good measure) and was only sold as an entry level 3 door to satisfy the Irish market. Watch the 1.4 litre engine in that model Astra though, the timing belt needs to be changed every 40k miles and they tend to blow head gaskets too.

I've a 1.6 diesel Astra van for work , nice to drive ,especially on the motorways , back very small for a van , i can imagine the boot in the car version must be tiny

All that says is that you've never driven a decent saloon car ;)

i drove a 1.4 astra 5 door hatchback for a few years and never had any engine problems with it , saying that i took the advice of a good service mechanic who advised me to change timing belt water pump and brake pads around 40 k miles ...... actually used it as a taxi for around 20,000 miles before selling it on , never had any problems with NCT. SO GOOD CAR FOR ME , you should pick up a decent one for around 2 grand

brother bought a 02 astra...never had any problems atal...so i bought a 04 and still no problems. timing belt and water pump every 40k is is really. head gasket on models up to 2001 liked to go...but if you dont drive it hard from cold and keep coolant in it(like all cars)...then you'll be fine
