Ok so i understand im going to have to do a bit of proper research in order to get a real figure. But at the moment im just doing a quick brain storm to see if i can even afford trying to get a car on the road. So can anybody give me a ballpark figure of what insurance would cost me if i was a completely new driver and was 28 years of age? Lets say i was driving a fiat punto 1.2. Roughly.....:)

Insurance costs can vary hugely. The companies change their rates to change their portfolio. So a company can give you a different quote if you call back a month later. Make a few call, check online brokers. Get loads of quotes and one will stand out as the best.

My first quote, female aged 24 at the time, was 800euro on a 1.25 fiesta. To name my boyfriend who is 25, never driven before either but we don't even live together (or in the same county!), almost doubled my quote!
Go onto loads of website and do a quote using your fake car and see! I would say it's unlikely you'll get less than a grand anyway

I'd advise you to get on the PHONE rather than online quoting systems. The online systems are okay if you have a full license, but without one you could start getting crazy quotes. Put aside an hour and get the phonebook out and ring around to as many brokers and insurance companies that you can find. That's the only way to do it imo.

I would honestly try insure.ie. I priced adding me to the parents policy (a '08 Nissan Note, 1.4) and it was €2500 (I'm a 17 female on my learners) so I tried insure.ie and it was €900!

Ok thanks for the tips folks. Anybody got any advice re; haggling? Is this a done thing, is it worth my while asking them to go lower or should i just accept their first offer as the best their going to do?

It is not quiet haggling, but start off with the basic info and get a basic quote. Then check if their is a discount for having an alarm, off street parking, etc. Add anything that may reduce the price that they did ask. Taking driving lessons with any ADI instructor can get you a discount with most insurance companies.

As ADIDriving said, it's not quite haggling. But you can play brokers off each other when comparing cover. So if you get quotes from different brokers, just see which is the cheapest and see if you can get the other brokers to reduce their price.

If you're in a trade union or a club/society/association that is part of a group scheme, that can get you big discounts.

I was quoted €1100, €850 and €1400 for Third Party Fire and Theft, eventually getting €550 for Fully Comp. through my union.

That was for a Micra, on a Learner Permit, though admittedly an over 40s female.

Well it's still lower than mine! I'm male, 26 years old with 2 years no claim bonus and have a full license. And my premium?? €640 3rd party

Must be great to be a chick Spurious! And good luck with your test!

Alot of policies have gone up in price since last year mine fully comp with over six years bonus is 470e a year or 260e third party,A certain insurer who bought shares in anglo wanted over 1100e:eek:.
OP you should also compare the policies some include break down assist/window cover etc others dont yet could be cheaper by only 20e for me paying an extra 20e gives me piece of mind.

It pays to shop around, i had quotes ranging from 2500 to 800! And the cover for the 2500 policy was not much better that the cheapest! I ended up going for the middle ground and going with a 900 policy from Aviva.

A mate of mine insurance was something like 2800 punts all those years ago so nothing has really changed in the last twelve years or so for young male drivers.

Indeed any male driver under 25 is a boy racer no mater what!!

All the fuc*ing morons in their little boy racer cars make insurance soar for good young male drivers...!

Does anyone know what the hell is going on with car insurance this year? My policy is up for renewal and they've nearly doubled the price on last year. What a joke!

Insurance has gone up across the board. Shopping around is the only way to do it. Phone book and an hour or so of your time should get you a good idea of what the best price is.

No it was the one for women in particular. Are you not allowed to post company names on this? I've got quotes online from various companies but they're all really high. They can hardly be charging us more for the flooding last year are they?

Did you ring around or did you get online quotes? If it was the latter, i'd strongly suggest you ring around and get talking to brokers/insurance companies.

Ya I'll have to get on to that tomorrow. They were online quotes mostly even though FBD were extremely high over the phone.

I'm 17, learner permit. Been ringing every insurance company in the country. Quotes 2800-6100 third party fire and theft on 1L corsa. It's a complete joke. Going to have to sell the car I think:(

Thats awful but I remember back in the day when I first got my own policy having to pay a couple of grand and that was 9 years ago.
I used to pay the deposit and then the installments so it was a bit more manageable that way. Get your test done and it'll start to go down.
    Good luck!
