Will developers go for it though? They'll have to hand over 30 percent to Apple. In many cases this will probably be a better deal than what they are currently left with after retailers, etc are finished taking their part, but what about those who already sell downloads from their website? Will the App Store exposure make it worth dropping their prices?

Steam has been a big success doing pretty much the same thing for games, so it definitely has the potential to be very successful. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

They have millions of accounts with credit cards. Exposure will be huge, as will accessibility. Not to mention anti-piracy controls.

If I need to download some utility, I can just open the App Store, run a search, see reviews and ratings side-by-side, click once to pay and install.

The alternative is to run a google search, check out various developers' websites, scour the net for reviews, perhaps buy an app through paypal, get a licence key in an email, download, install the app, enter licence key. It's a different world compared to what's happening on the iOS App Store at the minute.

From a gaming standpoint, two points:

    - Where does this leave Steam? Presumably their revenue model is similar to Apple's. Will developers use both stores now, or will Steam remain the defacto store for games.

    - What about Game Center integration? It makes a lot of sense to me.

Given that Steam is on Windows and Linux and the App Store will be OS X-only I'd say Steam won't have too many worries about the App Store to begin with.

If the Appstore idea means that Apple effectively create a repository-style distribution mechanism for third-party software and updates, it could get very interesting. (I kind of hope it works just so that Microsoft will nick the idea for whatever version of Windows comes next).

Not quite as bad as the app store mobile rules - but it is early days yet, the max app store will be great (unless you know how a computer works - then it will be **** and lacking of apps that do what you need)

Not all app developers choose to sell their apps via the App store. They have to pay commission to Apple, and adhere to certain requirements in order to sell via the App Store, many simply continue to sell through other means to avoid those requirements, and the commission.

    You can download DropBox here.

As Johnmb said, it's not on the Mac App Store. It wouldn't be allowed as it currently stands as it uses admin privileges to work. The Mac App Store is not intended as a one-stop shop for apps like the iOS App Store. Unlike iOS, the Mac is an open platform, so application developers are free to distribute their apps as they see fit.
