I have a 04 honda civic that needs ballbearing replaced in the gear box. Local garage (not dealer) has quoted 550-600 for doing the job.

    2 questions:

    1) does this seem like a decent price?

    2) I'm heading to belfast next weekend. Could anybody reccomend a garage there and would it save a few bob?

    Thanks and advice appreciated

That's quite a decent price for a gearbox rebuild. I'd get the clutch done at the same time too unless its had a very recent change.

Could that be related or just for cost effectiveness?

It's a 6 year old car. If it's the original clutch it's probably well worn at this stage. While the box is out the clutch is easily accessible and worthwhile to swap out especially if you plan on keeping the car. If it failed in a few months time you'd get stung with labour charges for the swap. More preventative than anything else

The same thing happened to my wife's old 3 door 02 Civic too. Honda paid for the parts from good will although the car was well out of warranty. You should chase it up with the dealer.

Cost of parts is the least of your worries: 2 bearings (on the mainshaft),2 driveshaft seals,3 liters of Honda MTF gearbox oil.Comes roughly to 90-100+VAT

Talked to mechanic and he was saying about 150 extra for clutch to be done. Had thought it would be cheaper given that the job would be easier to do as he was doin clutch anyhow??

The €150 extra is probably for the clutch kit. Seems fair enough
