Does anyone know if there is any changes to the procedure of paying VRT on a 5 year old car. Previously the revenue office did not check the interior of the car for any extras if it was over 4 years old and they just took the price of VRT as the price calculated on their computer database. Does anyone know if anything has changed as the nct are now doing this. You would imagine the nct crowd would look at the extras a bit more.

    From CompleteCar.ie

New procedures for importing vehicles from September

The Irish Revenue Commissioners have announced the introduction of new procedures for the importing of used vehicles into the State. From the first day of September pre-registration examinations will be carried out by the National Car Testing Service (NCTS).

An appointment with an NCTS office must be made within seven days of the vehicle entering Ireland. In total, 30 days are allowed for the whole registration process to be completed. This improves on the current requirement of 24 hours, which is largely ignored.

The person importing the vehicle must bring it, and its associated documentation, to the NCTS for examination. If satisfactory, the details will then be forwarded to Revenue, who will determine the required VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax). Payment is made directly to the NCTS.

Revenue will assign a registration number to the vehicle, and send it to the NCTS Centre. The registered owner will then receive the vehicle registration certificate in the post directly from the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division of the Department of Transport, based in Shannon.

The new procedures attract no additional costs. While there is a charge paid to the NCTS for each vehicle examined, this is offset against the VRT bill.

Appointments can be made on the phone, through the post or online at www.ncts.ie/vrt.

Brought in my new (5-year-old) car last week and went through the VRT procedure at the NCT centre in Limerick.

No problems at all - didn't check the interior of the car or anything (and it does have a lot of extras) just had a look at the chassis number in the engine and that was it.

Not sure if it's down the individual inspector but once you have the paperwork ready it seems to be a very quick and easy process.

Only bummer is you have to get an NCT even if the MOT is still valid grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Yes, Neddieog, you have to pay irish tax regardless of the tax paid in uk , without paying tax you wont get the log book from motor tax

I just brought a car in from the UK, booked it in for it's VRT inspection and everything. The guy I bought it from, Mike, told me he taxed it for 6 months and that I could apply for a refund which might be worth £100. Is this right?

You will need to apply to the British taxing authourties (DVLA)...Heres a link:

but i think only the person who taxed it can get a refund (open to correction)
