I saw a few of his fights a while back and he really really impressed. Still very raw but fantastic talent and power. He was a junior world champion before he defected to Ireland in 2007 and has been fighting out of cork ever since.
But I'm just wondering why there hasnt been a major push to get him recognised on the world stage.
He's unbeaten so far and reminds me of an un-polished Tyson with masses of potential. Everyone knows the heavyweight scene is dwindling and I think he's exactly what the division needs.

hmmm not sure ,I'd love to see him start fighting boxers alot higher up the rankings for sure! THere is no doubt about this guys speed and power, but his opponents are rubbish

In fact, in an ideal world I'd love to see a guy like Mike Perez unleashed on David "the haymaker " just to see what is what...

We spend too long molly coddling in this country. He's a big strong lad now so lets see what he's made of instead of protecting him by matching him against cans.

I get sick of hearing about 25 year olds needing to get more experience (and that goes for any sport). If you're not good enough by then its probably fair to say that with only a very few exceptions you're just not good enough. Sure, heavyweights can get better with age, but most of the good ones were pushing for world titles by the age that Perez is at now.

I wonder how far he'd be up the pecking order if he'd moved to the states instead of here. Methinks if he was training in a Philly gym he'd be a whole lot better.....

For the record I like perez and would love to see him fighting Tyson Fury or someone of that standard

I agree 100% with the above. I was actually thinking the same thing about what would he be like if he was fighting out of America, and I honestly think he would at least have fought someone decent by this stage.
He has potential to be world-class but I think he's being wrapped in cotton wool here and as much as I hate to say it I think he'd be better off if he packed up and went Stateside. Imagine what he'd be like in the hands of Freddy Roach. I bet he'd be in title contention by this stage. And tbh I'd love to see him in Audley Harrisons place now. :D

Good to see that Peters has Perez once again bottomfeeding!

Fair enough Perez is out three times before the end of the year but what kind of challenge is poor ould Pavels??

Oh he has a record of 6-9-1 - thats not too bad in comparision to the "shít-on-a-stick" he has previously been in with but when you look closer at his record he has lost 6 of his last 7 and in he six wins his opponents had a combined record of 1-13!!!

Speak of the devil......Perez has been named on the undercard for saturdays big fight in Limerick.

    Thursday, 04 November 2010 Mike_Perez_6_Web.jpg
Cork based Cuban heavyweight Mike “The Rebel” Perez has been added to the undercard for this Saturday's Hunky Dorys Fight Night: Big Bang Theory at the University Arena in Limerick. The main event will feature the first ever all Irish European title fight as Limerick's own Willie “Big Bang” Casey takes on Dubliner Paul Hyland for the vacant European Super Bantamweight title while the hard hitting Perez will feature on the supporting card stepping in for fellow Cork based Cuban, Alexei Collado who has been forced off the card with a back injury sustained in training.

Perez has endured 2 frustrating months on the sidelines through illness but he is determined to make up for lost time starting on Saturday night. Perez contracted spotted fever from an insect bite while on holiday in August and the debilitating nature of the illness forced him to withdraw from scheduled fights in September and October. He was originally scheduled to return to action on November 20th but when presented with the opportunity to return to action 2 weeks ahead of schedule Perez was only too happy to accept.
“It's been so frustrating missing out on fights and all over an insect bite!,” revealed Perez, who won a World Junior title for his native Cuba in the amateur ranks. “I thought nothing off it at the time but when I got back to Cork after the holiday I knew I didn't feel right. I had lots of tests done in hospital and the doctors eventually diagnosed it as spotted fever. I was quite sick with it and very run down. Whenever I tried to train my joints swelled up and it was very painful. The doctors told me that I just had to rest and let the medication take it's course but it was very frustrating. I've been back in the gym now for the last month and just got two good weeks of sparring in so I'm feeling 100% now and I just want to get in the ring and start knocking guys out again!”

Limerick has proven to be a happy hunting ground for Perez in the past and he will be hoping for similar success on Saturday against Pavels Dolgovs. Back in May he made Irish boxing history by fighting twice in the Treaty city in one night! On that occasion he needed just 48 seconds to record his first victory before winning his second fight in the third round less that 2 hours later.

With his current record standing at 11 straights wins (9 by KO) since turning professional and relocating to Cork in 2008 Perez is one of the most exciting young talents in the heavyweight division and promoter Brian Peters expects him to make a big impact on the heavyweight division in the next 12 months.

“Mike's been unfortunate over the past year with injury and illness but hopefully he has turned the corner now,” said Peters. “He had a serious shoulder injury which kept him out of the ring for over a year and he only returned to the ring in May and was just starting to get some momentum together again when he became ill.

“He's back to his best now though and three fights in 5 weeks should see him back on track and finishing off the year in style. Mike's only just turned 25 a couple of weeks ago so he's still very young by heavyweight standards and he's such an explosive fighter that I truly believe he will be the shooting star on the world heavyweight scene over the next 12 months or so.”

Perez will be joined on Saturday night's card by compatriot and fellow Team Thomas member Luis “El León” Garcia with the prodigiously talented 22-year-old looking to continue his meteoric rise through the professional ranks when he takes on former two time World Champion Byron Mitchell. The American was the first man to put Joe Calzaghe on the canvas and is a noted puncher. Garcia has had just ten fights to date but is on the verge of cracking the world's top 20.

Saturday nights card also includes the return of Martin “Iron Man” Rogan as the hugely popular Belfast heavyweight returns from a year long absence following a potentially career threatening neck injury. Limerick based Galwegian Alan Donnellan also features with the 22-year-old light middleweight looking to stretch his unbeaten professional record to 3 straight wins against Bulgaria's Zahari Mutafchiev. The LIT graduate has prepared for the contest by sparring with current Irish middleweight champ, Gary O'Sullivan and new Galway pro Jon Fogg who makes his debut at the University Arena on Saturday when he takes on Kiko Martinez's training partner Ricky Pow.

There will also be an Irish title on the line on Saturday when Anthony Fitzgerald and Lee Murtagh finally look to get it on with Fitzgerald's Irish title at stake. The duo were scheduled to clash on 2 previous occasions but both encounters were scrapped after Murtagh was forced to withdraw through injury but he will be hoping it's third time lucky on this occasion. Exciting Dublin prospects Brendan Fitzpatrick and Gavin Prunty also feature on the card

He's fighting yet another washed up can in castlebar on the 20th. Danny Batcheldor- he has a record of 25-8-1 and he's lost 7 of his last 8 fights
    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=9084&cat=boxer:rolleyes:

Why cant they just put him up against somebody decent and give him a test at this level. Its so frustrating.

Not that bad an opponent considering he's gonna be fighting 3 times in a month or there abouts. However from 2011 on we will need to see quality as opposed to quantity for Mike.

That's the only impressive part about it. Batcheldor is on a losing streak and it just seems like another opportunity to give Perez another win on his record rather than giving him a test.
I agree there needs to be a definate improvement in the quality of his opponents next year.

Yeah he is defo been brought in so perez can get the win but hopefully Batcheldor brings something to the table and Pere can come out of the fight having learned something. He needs to get back on good shape as well. Loads of good fights available in Ireland and the uk for him.

he's too slow and has been fighting chumps he needs to step it up and fight someone decent was at ringside for one of his fights sure he looked good beating the tar out of some journey man that just fell over inside a round but i want to see him take on someone half decent ... personsally i'd have liked to see him against Martin Rogan or even chrisora

His career will be ruined in Ireland. If you wanna make it big, you have to not box in this country. Too many bums in high-profile fights here. I mean - that guy Murray fought was billed as top 10. Top 10 what? Guy was a scrub.

agree 100 per cent Murrays opponent was woeful, and same goes for 95% of opponents peters flys in from Latvia, Bulgaria, latin America etc pure and utter rubbish. was at the show last night and some of these foreign guys were laughable in one case the guy clearly had only been boxing since last week. wont pay to watch pro boxing in Ireland again, will stick to amateur more competitive and way more skill on display
