I had a similar problem with my old Focus but it didn't lock completely. This is a common problem on early MkII Focus where water leaks in to the lock actuator from the number plate housing and causes the actuator to trip out. Ford made a better insulated actuator lock from around 2007 onwards, they replaced mine and covered the cost of the part but not the labour as a goodwill gesture.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you as mine wasn't stuck locked but I did check the numberplate lights and found the source of the leak as the light fittings were a bit corroded where the water leaked in.

Thanks Bazz26. Have spoken to a few people and it looks like that might be the problem.

Might give Ford a ring and try them.

    Cheers!!

No problem. They might also be familiar with getting the boot open without damaging it in the process.

They will probably replace the the lock menchainsim that is faulty/has water damage and the switch in the handle.

The boot lock on the Focus is electronic, ie there is no key hole, it opens either via the key fob or when you place your hand under the boot lid to open it. 9 out of 10 times with the Focus it is usually water that leaks into the lock mechanisim between both numberplate lights.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but this is exactly what has happened to mine in the past few days....

I managed to pull out some of the rubber that covers the boot button and a good bit of water came out.... dried it out with some kitchen roll, put the rubber back in and it worked...

though... an hour or two later, same thing again when I went to open the boot. Only worked via the button on the key, not the boot.

Looks like I will need to remove the number plate lights to get at the source?

Can anyway comment on this that has done it?

    Thanks...

I have same kind problem on my 06 Focus Saloon. The boot is not opening with key or handle, but if I put pressure on the boot lid and try the handle it will open. However I have noticed that with my lights on , the number plate lights will not work, even tho they are ok, when I press the fob, the plate lights will flash and stay on very dim? I can feel the lock mechanism click when I press the fob, although it is a very weak click. I had a new front screen fitted last week, and am just wondering if this may have something to do with it? Any ideas?

Two differant problems here both common first one is the switch filling with water just replace the switch it pops out with a screwdriver.

Second one is the boot wiring loom which breaks at the l/h hinge best thing to do is just replace the loom instead of trying to repair it they arnt expensive.

Do the loom now while you can still open the boot otherwise you will have to remove the lock with the boot closed.

Spray some lubricant on the key, the key-hole, and the lock. Then try to open the boot by gently twisting the key in the key-hole.

Where would you suggest they put the key ??

Resurrecting an old thread but it is relevant.

I have a 2005 focus mk2 saloon with funny boot lock.

I can only open it from the fob when it is closed even doors are unlocked.

When I close the boot lid, 8 of 10 times it doesn't close fully(closed but lid moves up and down).

In this half closed state, button on the boot lid works and open the lid. After couple of try I can close it properly.

I suspect latch needs adjustment but I don't get why button on the lid works only when boot is half closed.

I guess this will be a NCT Fail next Saturday as well.

    Any recommendation ?

I would think the wiring loom is broken where it flexis on the bootlid.

Have you number plate lamps ??

Pop the rubber wiring harness protector out of the bootlid on the left had side and give the wires a tug individually id say you will find some broken.

Make sure not to close the bootlid or you wont get it open too easy if they are broke.

Best solution is a new loom from a dealer because the wires are not colour coded and not easy to repair.

Thanks Martin. I will check the loom and report back.

Do you think broken loom can cause the "boot not closing properly" issue as well ?

It can cause all sorts of problems but its possible you may need a lock aswell start with the loom though because that would be the cause of the lock being faulty.
A simple check is see are your number plate lights working its not always the case but a lot of the time its a tell tale sign the loom is faulty.
