Peeling wallpaper repairs?

I am preparing a room for painting and have got to deal with the existing wall paper first. The paper is very soundly stuck to the wall for the most part and I dread the thought of trying to remove it.
Is there a preparation which will restick the paper in those areas where it is becoming unstuck and allow me avoid stripping the wall paper.

Get yourself a small tub of border/overlap adhesive and a small brush. Wet the edges of the seams where it's peeling with a damp sponge and allow the paper to become pliable...then brush some of the adhesive onto the seams and sponge them closed.
Allow to dry fully before painting.

I hope the paper is suitable to paint over or peeling seams are going to be the least of your problems...

Thanks for that - how will I know if epaper can be painted on? It's an old house and the room used to have a coal fire so there is lots of black staining on the walls. should I try to wipe it clean?

Well if there's already paint on it is a good indicator :)
If it's textured like woodchip or anaglypta with a plain non shiny finish then it's fine, same with lining paper....but if it's flock or vinyl (shiny with a printed pattern) then you're going to have problems getting paint to stick to it.
Definitely clean it before painting (assuming you can paint it)...soot will bleed through multiple layers of paint and mean having to give additional coats.
